Description
Ryuuki Shi, youngest son of Emperor Shi Senka, ascended to Saiunkoku's throne after his four elder brothers perished in a succession war and his second brother, Shi Seien, faced exile for treason. His childhood endured severe mistreatment from his mother and brothers, including prolonged confinement in dark spaces that instilled lasting fears of darkness and solitude. Seien alone offered kindness, becoming Ryuuki's vital emotional anchor. Following Seien's exile, Ryuuki sought refuge in the imperial archives under Kou Shouka's mentorship. Shouka provided his education and arranged swordsmanship training with General Sou Shungai. Despite his intelligence, Ryuuki initially evaded ruling duties, wandering the palace to avoid officials. He deliberately spread rumors of a preference for male company to deter marriage prospects and heir production, hoping Seien would return to claim the throne.

His reign transformed upon encountering Kou Shuurei, an impoverished noblewoman invited as a consort. Inspired by her dedication to improving citizens' lives, he embraced his role as emperor. Demonstrating early cunning, he passed a law permitting women to take imperial examinations, enabling Shuurei's governmental career. Though deeply devoted to her, his romantic feelings remained unreciprocated for years. Political inexperience led to vulnerabilities, notably during a locust plague where nobles exploited his past neglect, eroding his authority and forcing reliance on adversaries like Prime Minister Tei Yuushun. This culminated in a civil war led by Ou Ki. Ryuuki fled the capital but secured victory through Yuushun's defection and support from the Eight Coloured Clans.

Personal growth involved confronting his trauma, particularly around parenthood. He eventually married Shuurei, but she died in childbirth, devastating him. Their daughter, Shi Chouka, initially triggered his fears due to Shuurei's death, yet he developed a deep, albeit awkward, bond with her, often carrying her during state affairs. He adopted Hyou Riou Jr., a boy met in the archives, as crown prince. Ryuuki never remarried nor took concubines. Chouka succeeded him after his death at age 50.

Skilled in swordsmanship and possessing strategic intellect, Ryuuki remained politically naive and impulsive, relying on advisors like Seiran (later revealed as his exiled brother Seien) and Ran Shuuei. His relationships included mutual respect with Shouka, rivalry-turned-trust with Seiran, and brotherly camaraderie with Shuuei. Despite flaws, he evolved into a ruler committed to justice and reform, establishing stability before his daughter's reign.
