Description
Shuei Ran, also called Ran Shuuei, hails from the powerful Ran clan, one of Saiunkoku's eight noble houses. As the fourth son among five brothers, including younger brother Ran Ryuuren and half-sister Ran Jyuusan, his childhood saw him sent to Kiyou to aid Prince Seien. This assignment ended in humiliation when the prince dismissed him as weak after a failed attempt to intervene in an assassination, driving Shuei Ran back to Ran province for rigorous swordsmanship training under the Shiba clan, Ran family retainers.

Initially pursuing a civil path as an adult, he achieved second place ("Bōugen") in the Imperial Examinations at age eighteen. Disillusioned by Emperor Ryuuki's seeming neglect of governance, he shifted to the military, rising to General of the Left Habayashi Army. His combat prowess established him among Saiunkoku's greatest swordsmen, surpassed only by Grand Generals Koku and Haku at his peak. This skill later enabled him to recognize Shi Seiran's true identity through distinctive sword techniques.

Calm in demeanor, Shuei Ran frequently teased colleagues, especially Li Kouyuu, whom he persistently claimed as his best friend despite Kouyuu's constant denials. He openly provoked Kouyuu regarding the latter's aversion to women. While known as a womanizer, this behavior stemmed from attempts to forget his unrequited childhood love for his sister-in-law, Ran Gyokuka. His romantic focus shifted upon encountering Hyou Shusui, experiencing love at first sight, though she did not recall their initial meeting. He later rescued her from imprisonment, earning her respect; they married and had three sons: Ran Shijaku and two unnamed younger sons.

His loyalty became a pivotal conflict between allegiance to Emperor Ryuuki and the Ran clan. Ryuuki bestowed upon him a purple iris, a symbol of trust, which Shuei Ran engraved on his sword. However, clan pressures eventually forced him to return the sword and retire to Ran province. Banished by his clan for supporting Ryuuki, he rejoined the emperor after confirming Ryuuki's genuine commitment to governance. This reinstatement cost him his generalship, reducing him to a subordinate role under Seiran. During the crisis of Kou Shuurei's disappearance, he infiltrated the Hyou clan to locate Shusui and assess Shuurei's condition. He later defended Ryuuki against rebel Ou Ki's forces. Ultimately reinstated into the Ran clan after its leader, Setsuna, acknowledged Ryuuki's legitimacy, he remained by Ryuuki's side until his death while protecting the emperor.

Beyond combat, he served as Ryuuki's personal guard alongside Seiran and was considered one of the reign's greatest military officials. Socially, he regularly purchased ingredients for dinners at Shuurei's residence, earning the nickname "wallet #1" from Seiran.
