Ikki du Phénix, originally the Bronze Saint of Phoenix, is Shun d'Andromède's elder brother. Orphaned in childhood, both were recruited by the Graad Foundation. When Shun faced assignment to Death Queen Island, Ikki defied orders and took his place, enduring brutal punishment from Tatsumi. On the island, Ikki trained under the merciless Guilty, who preached hatred as the ultimate power source. During this period, the anime adaptation depicts Ikki meeting and falling in love with Esmeralda, Guilty’s daughter, who offered him emotional solace. In a pivotal confrontation, Guilty commanded Ikki to kill him for the Phoenix Cloth. Ikki refused, provoking Guilty's attack. Esmeralda intervened and died shielding Ikki. Her death ignited Ikki’s latent hatred, enabling him to defeat Guilty and claim the Phoenix Cloth after overcoming the Black Saints and their leader, Jango. Consumed by rage, Ikki became the Black Saints' leader, targeting Mitsumasa Kido’s "creations"—including Shun and fellow Saints—for vengeance. He debuted as an antagonist during the Galaxian Wars, stealing Sagittarius Gold Cloth parts. After defeat by Seiya, Shiryū, Hyōga, and Shun, memories of Shaka de la Vierge—who spared him earlier on Death Queen Island—resurfaced, aligning him with Athena. Despite his solitary and abrasive nature, he repeatedly aided the Saints at critical junctures, often appearing unexpectedly to support his brother or allies. His combat prowess eclipses typical Bronze Saints, rivaling or exceeding many Silver and Gold Saints. Signature techniques include the Hōō Genma Ken, assaulting the nervous system with hallucinations, and the Hō Yoku Tenshō, a devastating energy blast. He mastered the Seventh Sense early, achieving light-speed combat, and later awakened the Eighth Sense, allowing Underworld traversal without physical dissolution. His Phoenix Cloth regenerates after destruction, mirroring his resilience. During the Poseidon conflict, Ikki defeated Lyumnades Kayza and confronted Sea Dragon Kanon, extracting intel on Poseidon’s revival. In the Hades arc, he entered the Underworld to assist the Saints, defeating Garuda Aiacos—one of Hades' top judges—and confronting Hades after the deity possessed Shun. Attempting to forcibly separate Hades from Shun, Ikki was imprisoned in Cocytus, the frozen hell for gods’ defiers. In the Inferno chapter, he escaped Cocytus—aided by Pandora in the manga or through self-power in the anime—rejoining the Underworld battle. He intercepted Specters threatening allies, notably defeating Harpy Valentine, enabling Seiya and Hyōga to advance toward Elysium. Pandora later revealed his erased childhood encounter with her, where he resisted her attempt to implant Hades' soul into Shun. In Saint Seiya: Next Dimension, Ikki traveled 243 years into the past. Kaiser Leo designated him the future Gold Saint of Leo. He battled figures like Garuda Suikyou and Gemini twins Cain and Abel, surviving techniques like the Galaxian Explosion due to prior exposure. In Saint Seiya Omega, he maintained his solitary persona while supporting Athena’s new Saints. He fought Mars’ forces, sustaining a "Darkness"-inflicted wound that temporarily restricted his cosmos. Later, he tracked Pallasites to Pallas Belda, defeated Mila, and clashed with Égéon. Both vanished in a dimensional explosion after destroying Égéon’s weapon, though Ikki survived and transmitted his cosmos to secure Kōga’s final victory.
