Shun d'Andromède serves Athena as a Bronze Saint, renowned for immense power tempered by a gentle, pacifistic nature. This core aversion to violence defines him, leading him to resolve conflicts without bloodshed whenever possible. He accesses his full combat capabilities only when absolutely necessary or his patience breaks, transforming into a formidable fighter.
Born in Japan as Phoenix Ikki's younger brother, Shun was among the children gathered by Mitsumasa Kido for Saint training. His early sensitivity and dislike for fighting meant he often relied on Ikki's protection. During training, he initially struggled but persevered with support from his partner, Chameleon June. To earn the Andromeda Cloth, he endured the "Sacrifice of Andromeda," chained to cliffs against the rising tide. Instead of force, Shun freed himself through his affection for Ikki, demonstrating reliance on emotional bonds over strength. He then traveled to Japan seeking reunion with his brother.
At the Galaxian Wars, Shun defeated Unicorn Jabu, showcasing his Andromeda Chains' defensive and offensive potential. His primary motivation was encountering Ikki again. This reunion proved tumultuous as Ikki, corrupted by training on Death Queen Island, stole the Sagittarius Gold Cloth. Shun joined Seiya, Shiryu, and Hyoga to retrieve it and helped restore Ikki's humanity.
During the Sanctuary arc, Shun confronted Gold Saints. After Aldebaran allowed passage, he reached the Gemini Temple, briefly awakening his Seventh Sense to escape Saga's Another Dimension. At the Virgo Temple, Virgo Shaka overwhelmed Shun and the others until Ikki's sacrifice intervened. Shun played a crucial role reviving Hyoga from Aquarius Camus's Freezing Coffin, channeling his cosmos to warm Hyoga's body, collapsing from exhaustion. His most significant feat was defeating Pisces Aphrodite alone at the Pisces Temple using Nebula Storm, avenging his master, Cepheus Albiore. However, he succumbed to Aphrodite's Bloody Rose and lost consciousness.
In the Poseidon arc, Shun defeated Marina General Io of Scylla by improvising new defensive chain techniques and later subdued Siren Sorrento without killing him, believing Sorrento retained goodness. He supported Athena and the other Bronze Saints against Poseidon despite his depleted state.
The Hades arc revealed Shun as the purest human of his era, chosen as Hades's vessel. Unaware, his body was possessed by Hades in the Underworld throne room after Lyra Orphée's death. Hades's soul dominated Shun, altering his appearance: hair turned black, skin paled, and eyes changed color. Possessed, Shun confronted Ikki. In a critical moment, Shun temporarily regained control, strangling himself and urging Ikki to destroy both him and Hades. Ikki's hesitation allowed Hades to regain dominance and defeat him. Shun was permanently freed through Athena's blood and encouragement, expelling Hades. Awakening, he rejoined the Bronze Saints in his Andromeda Cloth, proceeding to Elysion to help defeat Hades's true form.
Within the Underworld during the Hades Chapter - Inferno, Shun journeyed with Seiya. They navigated challenges like ferryman Charon, whose attack Shun defused through kindness, and faced specters like Rene using dimensional attacks. Shun primarily utilized his chains for defense and support. His presence and emotional state, like unintentionally distracting specter Lune with sorrow, indirectly aided allies. The arc underscored his internal struggle as Hades's vessel and unwavering compassion.
Beyond the original conflict, Shun appears in *Saint Seiya: Next Dimension*. He is the first Bronze Saint to return to Athena after Hades's defeat, escorting her to Olympus. Separated when traveling to the 18th century, he arrived in the past Sanctuary, encountering Pegasus Tenma. After a brief skirmish, Shun convinced Tenma he was a Saint from the future. They allied to traverse the Twelve Temples. In this timeline, Shun is acknowledged as the future successor to Virgo Shaka and thus the future Virgo Gold Saint.
In the non-canonical spin-off *Saint Seiya Omega*, Shun reappears years later as a supporting character. He reveals that during a battle against Mars, a cosmic event imbued Saints with elemental powers but inflicted him with a "dark wound" spreading across his left arm. This injury prevented effective cosmos use, forcing retirement as an active Saint. He transitioned into a wandering doctor, aiding the new generation of Bronze Saints, healing Ryūhō (Shiryu's son) and assisting Kōga (the new Pegasus Saint).
Shun's primary weapon is the Andromeda Chain, an integral part of his Cloth said to be the chains that bound Princess Andromeda. These chains are exceptionally durable, possess immense length capable of traversing space, and react autonomously to threats by emitting electric shocks (around 10,000 volts). Techniques like Rolling Defense and Nebula Storm leverage the chains for protection and offense. He typically uses them to subdue opponents without lethal force, reflecting his pacifism. Shun awakened his Seventh Sense during the Sanctuary arc. He temporarily wore the Virgo Gold Cloth during the battle against Thanatos. After the Gold Cloths were destroyed, his Andromeda Cloth evolved into the God Cloth, blessed by Athena's blood.
