Pharaoh della Sfinge, formally designated the Divine Bestial Star Sphinx, ranks among the 108 Specters serving Hades. His Surplice embodies the mythological Sphinx in a recumbent pose, drawing from Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian traditions where the Sphinx stands as guardian and enigma. The name "Pharaoh" directly references Egyptian royalty, echoing ancient depictions of pharaohs guarded by sphinxes. Originally Hades' personal musician, Pharaoh regularly performed for the Underworld god. This esteemed status faded after the Silver Saint Orphee descended to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. Following Pandora's command, Pharaoh used her mirror to create false sunlight, tricking Orphee into turning prematurely. This act petrified Eurydice halfway, binding Orphee eternally to her side in the Underworld's Flower Field. Consequently, Orphee's performances for Hades every 13th day diminished Pharaoh's standing as favored musician. During Athena's Saints' invasion of the Underworld, Pharaoh guarded the Second Prison – themed with Egyptian architecture for punishing gluttony – where he kept the three-headed hellhound Cerberus as a pet. After the Bronze Saints Seiya and Shun slew Cerberus, Pharaoh attacked in wrath. He wielded his harp and the technique "Balance of Curse," which extracts and weighs hearts against the Feather of Ma'at, condemning the impure. As the technique targeted Seiya, Orphee intervened. Pharaoh later discovered Seiya and Shun alive in Orphee's garden. Seizing Athena's Cloth using Pandora's mirror as a diversion, he was confronted by Orphee, who recognized the instrument of his past betrayal. Their musical duel culminated in Pharaoh shattering one of Orphee's harp strings. Orphee retaliated, severing all of Pharaoh's strings with his cosmos before executing a final, mortal attack. With his dying words, Pharaoh acknowledged Orphee's superiority, bowing to "the music that seduced Hades." In the spin-off "The Lost Canvas," Pharaoh serves as Gate Keeper of the Lost Canvas. He tested the Wyvern Specter Rhadamanthys' loyalty to Hades. Later, at the Lost Canvas entrance, he employed "Balance of Curse" to judge invading soldiers' and Saints' purity by weighing their hearts. The Gold Saint Sisyphos overcame the technique and defeated Pharaoh. His final act cursed the gates, ensuring they could only be destroyed by a force equivalent to a Big Bang.
