Caronte ferries souls across the Acheron in the Underworld, demanding payment in silver coins. When living Saints of Athena, Seiya and Shun, seek passage, he refuses, recognizing them. Wielding his large oar and the technique Spinning Oar or Crushing Whirlwind, a confrontation erupts after Seiya's impatience. Shun intervenes, offering his necklace as payment, which Caronte accepts. During the voyage, Caronte sings monotonously before hurling Seiya into the river where drowning souls attack. Shun rescues Seiya with his Andromeda Chain, prompting Caronte to attack Shun. Seiya retaliates with the Pegasus Meteor Fist, striking Caronte and knocking him off the boat. As Caronte drowns, he convinces Shun his death would strand them; Shun relents and saves him, and Seiya returns the oar. Reaching the shore near the First Prison, Caronte betrays them again, attacking with Crushing Whirlwind. Seiya engages him directly, defeating him with a more powerful barrage of Pegasus Meteor Fists. Caronte collapses onto his boat amidst scattered coins, and the unmanned vessel drifts away. Caronte exhibits a manipulative, opportunistic nature, alternating aggression with false truces. He acknowledges Shun's uniquely pure and kind demeanor, noting eyes devoid of malice, yet proceeds with treachery. His actions underscore the Underworld's perilous and deceptive environment.
