Aiolia de Leão, known as Leo Aiolia, serves as the Gold Saint guarding the fifth temple in Athena's Sanctuary. He is the younger brother of Sagittarius Aiolos, condemned as a traitor for allegedly attempting to assassinate the infant Athena. This legacy profoundly shapes Aiolia, driving him to prove unwavering loyalty to Athena while enduring the shame of his brother's alleged betrayal. Though initially believing in Aiolos's guilt, he maintained deep respect for his brother's memory.
Trained by John Black, Aiolia fights not for personal glory but to protect those he cherishes, including his attendants Lithos, Chrysalis, and Garan, whom he considers family. His personality is marked by impetuosity and a fiery spirit, often leading to clashes with calmer saints like Aries Mu. He shares a notably close bond with Virgo Shaka.
During the events of "Saint Seiya: Episode G," set seven years before the main storyline, Aiolia dyes his naturally blond hair red to distance himself from his brother's tainted legacy. His internal conflict—resenting the stigma while secretly loving his brother—fuels confrontations with other Gold Saints and defiance toward the Pope's orders. His combat prowess attracts attention from deities like Pontus and Hyperion, who deem him a "man of evil omens." A pivotal moment occurs when he unleashes the forbidden "Photon Burst" technique, inspired by Aiolos's memory, to defeat the Titan Koios, dedicating the victory to his brother.
In the Sanctuary arc of the original series, the Pope (Saga in disguise) manipulates Aiolia into retrieving the Sagittarius Cloth and eliminating Athena's Bronze Saints. During a confrontation in Japan, the Sagittarius Cloth awakens and envelops Pegasus Seiya, revealing a vision of Aiolos that halts Aiolia's attack. Returning to the Sanctuary, the Pope subjects him to the "Demon Emperor Fist," mind-controlling him into sadistically tormenting Seiya at the Leo Temple. Cassios's sacrificial death breaks the spell, freeing Aiolia. After the Sanctuary battle concludes, he witnesses Athena clear Aiolos's name, allowing his brother's spirit to rest peacefully.
In the Hades Chapter - Sanctuary segment, Aiolia swiftly defeats the Specter Worm Raimi. He is devastated when Shaka dies by the Athena Exclamation, reacting with fury toward the resurrected Gold Saints Saga, Camus, and Shura. Later, at Hades's castle, he, Mu, and Milo confront Wyvern Rhadamanthys but are severely weakened by Hades's divine will and cast into the abyss.
During the Hades Chapter - Inferno, Aiolia is trapped in Cocytus, a frozen hell, until Athena resurrects him. He joins the collective sacrifice of the twelve Gold Saints at the Wailing Wall, their combined power enabling the Bronze Saints to reach Elysium. His armor is later utilized by Phoenix Ikki.
In the spin-off "Soul of Gold," Aiolia is resurrected in Asgard, where he protects Lyfia, a handmaiden of Queen Hilda, and investigates disturbances caused by the god Loki. He temporarily awakens a God Cloth and is chosen by Odin to wield his robe. During this journey, he confronts an illusion of Shura—reflecting lingering anger over Shaka's death—but spares the real Shura when he offers aid. His reunion with Aiolos is emotionally charged, underscored by his retention of a necklace symbolizing their bond. He delivers the final blow against Loki before vanishing, assuring Lyfia his spirit will watch over her.
Aiolia is occasionally likened to the reincarnation of Achilles due to his exceptional power and combat skill. His character arc culminates in resolving his brotherly legacy, reaffirming his loyalty to Athena, and embracing his role as a protector across multiple divine conflicts.
