Description
Weed, son of Gin and Sakura, is born in the Japanese Alps alongside siblings Yukimura and Joe. He later becomes father to Sirius, Orion, Rigel, and Bellatrix. Following Sakura's early death from illness, the English Setter GB names him "Weed" to embody "small but powerful," pledging to reunite him with Gin in the Ōu Mountains. This journey defines his initial background through parental loss and displacement.
He possesses blue and white fur and blue eyes, closely resembling Gin. Weed inherits natural combat abilities, including the capacity to instinctively perform the Zetsu Tenrou Battouga—a specialized technique mastered by Gin and Riki. This skill first emerges when he saves GB and Sasuke from a guard dog, severing the aggressor's ear in an early confrontation. His appearance and fighting prowess immediately signal his heroic lineage.
Weed's personality is marked by profound kindness, unwavering loyalty, and a strict moral code centered on mercy. He consistently attempts to save or redeem adversaries, such as rescuing the villainous Blue from a truck collision and refusing to kill the defeated Hougen despite his atrocities. This ethos sparks conflicts, notably his banishment of Jerome for executing defenseless foes (Thunder and Lector), which Weed condemns as violating his "Thou Shalt Not Kill" principle. Allies like Kyōshirō criticize his stance as naive or "Stupid Good," arguing wartime necessitates lethal force. Yet, Weed remains resolute, prioritizing compassion even at the risk of isolation.
His development unfolds across major conflicts. In the Kaibutsu (Monster) arc, Weed witnesses allies Tokimune (Gin's substitute) and Smith die confronting the mutated dog P4. He defeats P4 by knocking it off a cliff, impaling it on a branch. During the Hougen arc, he rallies over 100 dogs to rescue the hostage Gin. After Hougen nearly kills him in a brutal battle, Weed is revitalized by spirits of fallen Ōu soldiers and defeats Hougen with the Battouga, sparing his life. Gin then formally designates Weed as Ōu's new leader.
Later arcs test Weed's leadership against escalating threats. He confronts Victor, a German shepherd invading Hokkaidō, aiding Jerome and Victor's defectors to thwart the takeover. When a hybrid bear kills Joe's mate Hitomi, GB sacrifices himself to save Weed. Weed avenges GB by battling the bear into a river, where it dies striking a floodgate. Surviving, Weed returns to Ōu and reunites with mate Koyuki, who later bears their four pups. Subsequent challenges include confronting the bear Monsoon in *Ginga: The Last Wars* (set six months after *Ginga Densetsu Weed: Orion*), as Monsoon attacks Futago Pass to avenge his father Akakabuto. Weed sustains severe injuries from one of Monsoon's kin.
Weed embodies themes of inherited responsibility and idealism. His refusal to abandon mercy, even towards irredeemable foes, cements his identity distinct from Gin's legacy, while his growth from a grieving pup to a resilient leader underscores his narrative trajectory.
