Description
Ichimokuren, also known as Ren Ichimoku, serves as a companion to Ai Enma. Originating as a tsukumogami, he gained sentience after roughly 100 years inhabiting a katana. Throughout this time, the blade witnessed extensive violence across multiple owners, possessing an aversion to bloodshed and a yearning for peace but unable to act. This included silently hoping a princess would escape a samurai's attack. Eventually abandoned on a battlefield, impaled in a rock near water amidst corpses, Ai Enma discovered him. She noted his undefined search and invited him to join her. Citing boredom, he accepted; Ai granted him a human form, beginning his service as her second companion. His age exceeds 300 years, placing him between the 500-year-old Wanyuudou and the 200-year-old Hone Onna in Ai's timeline.
He appears as a young man with chin-length black hair constantly obscuring his left eye, its presence or placement ambiguous. His visible right eye is light olive, matching the color of the large, projected eye he uses for distant observation. His attire changes: initially, he wears a white and green hooded jacket over a black shirt, black track pants with orange stripes, and black shoes. In *Two Mirrors*, he adopts a white and brown jacket with orange accents over a dark blue shirt, gray-striped black pants, and orange sneakers. *Three Vessels* features a white cardigan over a purple-patterned shirt and brown pants. He consistently wears a square metal pendant. Kissing this pendant at Ai's request transforms him into a dark blue straw doll with a red string around the neck.
Typically relaxed, he often smiles and jokes. He possesses a strong sense of justice, reacting swiftly to human cruelty and showing deeper empathy for virtuous clients than other companions. This empathy sometimes conflicts with his duties, prompting thoughts of intervention against perceived injustice, though he remains obedient to Ai. He considers his fellow companions family, as admitted quietly to Hone Onna, yet maintains a degree of detachment. His understanding of human behavior relies heavily on logic, leading to confusion over irrational actions. He frequently reflects on his past and human nature, still seeking the undefined "something" Ai observed upon their meeting.
His abilities include traveling between the human world and the Realm of Eternal Twilight, magically altering his clothing for investigations, and manipulating memories to create illusions of familiarity or false identities. He projects a large, non-physical eye onto surfaces to observe and listen remotely through obstacles, share sensory input, and emit intense light flashes. He closes his eyes during this projection. He can teleport via a whirlwind, sometimes initiating it with the eye projection. He demonstrates athletic prowess, including enhanced speed and combat skills. His transformation into the blue straw doll is activated through his pendant.
Following Ai's death in *Two Mirrors*, he lived briefly as a human, working as a sentō janitor. He resumed his role after Yamawaro recruited him under Kikuri's orders upon Ai's return. During *Three Vessels*, he posed as a science teacher at Yuzuki Mikage's school to investigate clients. When Yuzuki became Hell Girl, he and Hone Onna distanced themselves, seeking Tsugumi Shibata to verify suspicions about her motives for leaving Saigawara City. They correctly deduced Tsugumi aimed to alter Yuzuki's fate and departed after failing. Ichimokuren returned as Ai's companion after she reassumed the Hell Girl role.
The name "Ichimokuren" (一目連) translates to "one glance company," reflecting his eye-based abilities and drawing inspiration from the mythological one-eyed dragon deity associated with weather control.
