Tonpetty is a Tibetan Hamon master who instructed students like Will Anthonio Zeppeli, Straizo, and Dire. He presents as an elderly man with dark skin, brown eyes, a bald head, a white beard, and prominent eyebrows. His typical attire features light yellow monk robes with brown shoulder armor, sometimes including facial armor shaped like a hanbÅ.
He embodies wisdom and concern. During Zeppeli's training, Tonpetty cautioned him about a horrible fate should he continue his path, though he did not forbid it. Tonpetty uniquely possesses the ability to foresee an individual's future through touch, a skill exclusive to him. His students mastered various Hamon techniques under his tutelage, including healing methods.
In 1888, after Zeppeli located the Stone Mask, he sought Tonpetty's aid to destroy it. Tonpetty journeyed to Windknight's Lot with Dire and Straizo to confront Dio Brando. They arrived following Zeppeli's death and joined the battle against Dio's zombies. During Jonathan Joestar's final clash with Dio, Dire perished, but Tonpetty and Straizo eradicated the remaining undead. After Dio's defeat, Tonpetty incinerated Dio's clothing to erase his existence. He was last seen at the docks witnessing Jonathan and Erina depart for their honeymoon.
In the non-canon novel *JORGE JOESTAR*, Tonpetty, identified as Ngapoi Ngawang Tom Petty, emerges briefly. He foretells the crash of an airplane piloted by George Joestar II into the sea during World War I.
Within the *Phantom Blood* video game adaptation, Tonpetty is playable. His moveset includes a "Special Hamon" technique (an enlarged hand strike) and a "Super Special Hamon" (a rapid barrage of attacks), both created for the game due to his limited combat portrayal in the source narrative.
