George Joestar I is an upper-class English aristocrat living in late 19th-century England. After a carriage accident in 1868 killed his wife, Mary, he mistakenly credited a thief, Dario Brando, with trying to save his life. Even upon discovering Dario was actually robbing them and was later jailed for attempting to pawn Mary's wedding ring, George upheld his gratitude. He insisted he had willingly given Dario the ring, secured his release from prison, and provided him financial support for an unsuccessful hotel venture, demonstrating an unwavering sense of debt.
Twelve years later, while raising his only son, Jonathan Joestar, George learned of Dario Brando's death. Honoring his perceived obligation, he invited Dario's son, Dio Brando, to live in the Joestar Mansion, unconditionally accepting him as family. George's trusting and kind nature made him vulnerable to Dio's facade of superior manners and intellect. Consequently, he frequently compared Jonathan unfavorably to Dio and berated his son, straining their relationship.
Eight years after Dio's arrival, George became gravely ill from poisoning by Dio. After Jonathan secured proof of Dio's treachery and a cure, George, remorseful for having favored Dio, supported Jonathan's decision to have him arrested. As constables moved to arrest Dio, George overheard Wang Chan comment on Dio's luck and grew uneasy, sensing the arrest was proceeding too smoothly. When Dio attempted to stab Jonathan to activate the Stone Mask, George intervened, leaping in front of his son and taking the fatal knife wound in the back.
Mortally wounded, George died cradled in Jonathan's arms, expressing that it was best for a father to die in his son's embrace. His body was later removed from the burning Joestar Mansion and cremated separately.
Beyond the main narrative, George Joestar I is referenced in the light novel *JORGE JOESTAR*, where a character named Jorge Joestar is implied to be named after him. George also appears in a photograph viewed by the antagonist Kars, who accesses the memories of a seven-year-old Joji Joestar (Jorge) looking through the Joestar family photo album.
In video game adaptations, George appears non-playably. In *JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle*, he functions as a Campaign Support character, offering players a significant performance boost to achieve an S rank after a loss. In *Eyes of Heaven*, he serves as a guide through the game’s JoJo Dictionary feature.
A narrative parallel exists between George’s mistaken belief about Dario Brando and his claim about willingly giving away the ring, and similar motifs in Victor Hugo’s *Les Misérables*, involving Marius’s father and the Thénardiers, and Bishop Myriel’s actions toward Jean Valjean.
