Description
Hatsue Miyata is the daughter of Terukichi Miyata, the wealthiest man on the small Japanese island of Uta-jima. Initially adopted by a pearl-diving family on another island, she returned home after her father summoned her back to marry a suitable husband. Growing up with her adoptive parents, she learned pearl diving, gaining practical skills and a deep connection to the sea despite her affluent origins.

Physically, Hatsue possesses striking beauty, a healthy complexion, and vibrant cheeks. Her eyes are described as reminiscent of "opulent dark blue waves on the open sea." She maintains a robust, athletic build developed through years of pearl diving and physical labor.

In personality, Hatsue exhibits sincerity, modesty, and emotional perceptiveness. She works hard and displays fearlessness in dangerous pursuits like diving. Despite her wealth, she appreciates simplicity and respects the island's humble way of life. She adheres to a strong moral code, choosing chastity before marriage even when alone with her lover, Shinji Kubo. Her innocence and trust are evident when she accepts Yasuo Kawamoto's explanation after his attempted assault, initially believing his intentions were harmless.

Hatsue forms a romantic relationship with Shinji Kubo, a young fisherman from a modest background. Their bond begins with an innocent meeting at an abandoned watchtower where they share their first kiss and declarations of love. When gossip about their relationship spreads—instigated by Chiyoko's false claim they slept together—Hatsue's father forbids her from seeing Shinji and threatens marriage to Yasuo. Hatsue remains steadfast in her feelings, communicating with Shinji through secret letters and refusing to yield to pressure. She openly dismisses the rumors as lies, maintaining her trust in Shinji. Her commitment is further shown when she presents Shinji's mother with a handbag to mend relations after her father's rudeness, winning the mother's respect.

Her story reaches its climax when her father tests Shinji's worthiness by employing him on a freighter during a storm. After Shinji proves his bravery by saving the ship, Terukichi relents and permits their engagement. Hatsue and Shinji reaffirm their commitment, pledging to be each other's "light in the darkness" and "shelter in the storm," highlighting her unwavering loyalty.
