Description
Dr. Hamilcar Barcas, also known as Barcas the Elder or Old Bal, originated as an elderly European merchant over 400 years prior to the main events. His ship sank during a storm en route to the New World, leaving him the sole survivor. Washed ashore on the mysterious island of Silha, he encountered prehistoric creatures and mermaids before discovering an ancient temple. Within, he found the powerful being Archanfel suspended in an organic capsule. Overwhelmed by Archanfel's aura, Barcas reverently bowed, inadvertently awakening him.
Archanfel transformed Barcas into the first Zoalord, implanting a zoacrystal in his forehead and halting his aging. Tasked with recruiting ten other humans to form the Council of Twelve, Barcas co-founded the Chronos Corporation to advance Archanfel's vision of evolving humanity into Zoanoids and establishing a new world order. As Chronos' foremost scientist, he designed the first Hyper-Zoanoids and masterminded the optimization of most Zoalords, including Richard Guyot. His involvement in Guyot's Arizona optimization triggered the "Arizona Incident," where prototype Zoalords rebelled and were suppressed by the Council.
Barcas wields immense telepathic prowess, second only to Archanfel, enabling control over Zoanoids within a 10-kilometer radius. He demonstrates abilities like flight, energy projection, and telekinetic shields. Physically, he retains the appearance of a frail elderly man with long grey hair, a beard, and a visible forehead zoacrystal, his body unchanged since transformation. His personality blends scientific brilliance with unwavering loyalty to Archanfel, though capable of ruthless actions. This is exemplified when he kidnapped Sho Fukamachi's father, Fumio, transforming him into the anti-Guyver Zoanoid Enzyme II—an act that forced Sho to kill his own father in battle, traumatizing him.
After the fall of Chronos Japan, Barcas personally managed the Guyver threat at Relic's Point, deploying Team Five and Lost Numbers against Sho and Agito Makishima (Guyver III). Following Relic's Point's destruction and Chronos' global takeover on X-Day, he oversaw Zoanoid production refinement and developed the Enzyme III model. He also spearheaded construction of the organic starship Ark and modified the Hyper-Zoanoid ZX-Tole to counter the rogue Lost Number Aptom. A significant moment occurred when Barcas, distraught over losing control of the Arizona Relics, vowed to pursue Agito. Archanfel awoke from hibernation specifically to forbid this action, implying Barcas' powers might be self-destructive or insufficient against the Gigantic Dark armor.
In the live-action film *The Guyver*, the character diverges as "Fulton Balcus," portrayed as the sole Zoalord and primary antagonist who seeks a Guyver unit for personal power. This version lacks the elderly appearance and is defeated by the Guyver's Mega-Smasher. No concrete information exists regarding his appearances or adaptations in other OVAs or spin-offs beyond the manga, 2005 anime, and live-action films.
