Description
Aya Toujou first appears as an unassuming middle school student, her large glasses and plain hairstyle concealing her beauty. A transformation occurs when she switches to contact lenses and wears her hair down, revealing a curvy figure that garners significant attention. An accidental rooftop encounter with Junpei Manaka, where he glimpses her strawberry-print underwear, sparks the series' central romantic pursuit.

Academically gifted yet deeply reserved, she secretly nurtures a passion for writing fantasy novels in her math notebook. Her creative aspirations intertwine with personal growth after Junpei discovers her writing and shares his own filmmaking dreams, forging a bond centered on artistic collaboration. This connection leads her to decline admission to prestigious Oumi Academy, instead attending Izumizaka High School to remain near Junpei.

At Izumizaka, she joins the Literature Club, gains recognition for her writing, wins awards, and publishes her first novel. She serves as the primary scriptwriter for the Film Studies Club's annual projects, contributing to all three films directed by Junpei and portraying the heroine in their final collaboration. Her interactions with Junpei are marked by gentle, unspoken affection, though her shyness prevents an open confession until their third year. By then, Junpei has rekindled his relationship with Tsukasa Nishino, leading to Aya's heartfelt confession being regretfully rejected—an experience shaping her understanding of unrequited love.

Four years after graduation, she achieves notable success as a novelist, winning the Naoki Prize. Despite professional accomplishments, she retains the dream of collaborating with Junpei to adapt her original rooftop-inspired novel into an award-winning film. Personal closure remains nuanced; she cherishes the inspiration drawn from her past with Junpei yet grapples with unresolved feelings.

The sequel *East Side Story* introduces Nakama, an aspiring writer who encounters Aya when she falls near him, revealing strawberry-patterned underwear in an incident mirroring Junpei's initial experience. Nakama becomes drawn to her but learns from Satsuki Kitaoji that Aya's interest may stem from lingering attachments to Junpei. In a pivotal moment, Nakama confesses his feelings while acknowledging her emotional fixation, urging her not to abandon writing. This interaction highlights Aya's ongoing journey toward self-discovery beyond her first love.

Family relationships include a cousin, Haruka Toujou, and a brother whose presence often annoys her. Her surname's "Tou" (東, "east") reflects the cardinal direction theme shared among key female characters, later echoed in the sequel's title.
