Description
Miaka Yuuki is a 15-year-old Japanese junior high student preparing for high school entrance exams with her best friend Yui Hongo. She has long auburn or brown hair, brown or yellow eyes, stands 158 cm tall, and wears her school uniform: a white blouse, brown jacket, skirt, light-blue ribbon, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Outgoing, optimistic, and generous, Miaka also displays naivety and emotional sensitivity. She intensely loves food, often prioritizing meals in any situation. Her relationship with her mother is strained, leading Miaka to pursue Jonan Academy for approval despite preferring Yotsubadai High School.

While at the National Library, Miaka and Yui discover "The Universe of the Four Gods," an ancient Chinese-themed book that transports them inside its world. Separated from Yui during a slaver encounter, Miaka is rescued by warrior Tamahome. Emperor Hotohori identifies her as the Priestess of Suzaku, destined to gather seven Celestial Warriors to summon the god Suzaku for three wishes. Initially motivated by academic ambitions, Miaka accepts the role to secure admission into her desired high school.

As Priestess, Miaka travels the Konan Empire locating warriors marked with constellations: Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko. She develops a romantic relationship with Tamahome, shifting her priorities from academic wishes to staying with him. This triggers conflict with Yui, who becomes the rival Priestess of Seiryuu after trauma in the book’s world and jealousy over Tamahome. Miaka demonstrates compassion for allies and enemies alike, forming deep bonds—particularly with Nuriko, who evolves from antagonist to close friend. Her leadership involves self-sacrificial tendencies, repeatedly protecting others at personal risk.

After gathering the warriors and summoning Suzaku, Miaka uses three wishes: freeing Yui from Seiryuu’s control, sealing Seiryuu to weaken enemy Nakago, and restoring the book’s world—sacrificing her chance to remain with Tamahome. This final wish erases her memories of Tamahome in the real world. Tamahome is reincarnated as Taka Sukunami, a modern Japanese teenager. They reunite, marry, and Miaka becomes pregnant during their honeymoon.

In the Eikoden OVAs, set three years post-marriage, teenager Mayo enters the book, causing Miaka to fall comatose and spiritually transfer her pregnancy to Mayo. Miaka’s consciousness observes events as Mayo claims to be the new Priestess. Taka enters the book to retrieve Mayo and save their unborn child. After the warriors’ rebirth and Suzaku’s re-summoning, the crisis resolves. Miaka awakens, gives birth to son Hikari, and adjusts to motherhood while retaining her cheerful personality and love for food.
