Description
Chai serves as a low-ranking Chi You Men operative defined by his emaciated, 160 cm frame and 55 kg weight. His starved physique features complete baldness, missing eyebrows, light brown bloodshot eyes, and decaying teeth with visible gaps. Pronounced veins and warts mark his scalp, while a spinal condition prevents him from standing upright. He wears a ripped purple jacket without a shirt, tattered blue jean shorts secured by a yarn belt, and bandages on his limbs, typically barefoot.

His erratic speech incorporates vocal tics like "Heeegh" and vainly self-references as "the great Chai," often displaying manic expressions suggesting instability. Motivated solely by gaining recognition from leader Lan Di, he obsessively pursues Ryo Hazuki to steal the Phoenix Mirror. His combat style adapts Tanglangquan (Praying Mantis Fist) to his contorted form.

In Shenmue I and its anime adaptation, Chai stalks Ryo in Yokosuka following Lan Di's interest in the mirror. The anime depicts an early ambush at Hazuki Dojo (Episode 1), where Ryo defeats him—diverging from the game's later encounter. Chai later steals and consumes Ryo's Hong Kong ferry ticket at You Arcade. Collaborating with the Mad Angels, he orchestrates Nozomi Harasaki's kidnapping to lure Ryo. After repeated failures, he ambushes Ryo and Guizhang Chen at Yokosuka Harbor, dropping pipes that injure Guizhang before Ryo knocks him into the sea.

A side story reveals Chai followed Ryo onto the Hong Kong ferry, kidnapping passenger Xiaomei Ding to force another confrontation. Ryo again defeats him and throws him overboard.

In Shenmue III, Chai resurfaces stalking Ryo through Bailu Village and Niaowu. He observes Ryo after Yanlang defeats him, later stealing a treasure scroll from Shenhua Ling. During a subsequent fight, Chai divulges Chi You Men's transport of stonemasons to Niaowu before taking them hostage in a warehouse. Ryo defeats him once more. A peephole view of Chai's room shows a watermelon, bananas, a self-admiring poster, a family photo with a woman and girl resembling him, and a punching dummy bearing Ryo's picture, implying lingering obsession and potential familial ties.

Chai remains a persistent but ineffective antagonist, driven by desperate ambition to impress Lan Di through relentless yet unsuccessful schemes against Ryo.
