Abengane is a Nen Exorcist hired by Battera to enter Greed Island alongside Gon and Killua. He possesses dark skin and black hair, typically dressed in a dark blue shirt with light blue lines and matching pants. For concealment, he wears a beige cloak topped with a yellow poncho, leaving only his eyes and lower legs visible. His personality is taciturn and reflective, marked by emotional concealment and calmness under pressure. He demonstrates logical thinking and intelligence through rapid deductions about game mechanics and strategic discussions. While not overtly greedy, he consistently shows concern for financial gain.
During the Greed Island arc, Abengane passes Tsezguerra's trial to join the game. He becomes part of Nickes' alliance, where he deduces their strategy of monopolizing spell cards to prevent other players from defending their cards. When Genthru reveals himself as the Bomber and activates Countdown bombs on alliance members, Abengane analyzes the situation, noting Genthru's proficiency in Emission, Manipulation, and Conjuration, and deduces the bomb countdowns are linked to heart rates. He advises unity while questioning whether to fight or surrender cards. Later, he contacts Gon and Biscuit to warn them about Genthru, revealing the alliance's fate and requesting they avenge the members. Utilizing his Nen Exorcism ability, he performs a ritual involving a campfire, wooden effigy, and prayers to forest spirits, conjuring a snake-like Nen beast that devours the bomb curse. The beast's size and persistence depend on the curse's strength, remaining until the caster dies or exorcism conditions are met. He conceals the beast under his cloak.
After Gon defeats Genthru, Abengane approaches Genthru during Eta's quiz, touches his shoulder, and declares "I caught the Bomber" to dispel the lingering Nen. He remarks that Gon's group must have employed a flawless plan to overcome Genthru. Subsequently, the Phantom Troupe locates him via Kalluto's ability, and Hisoka negotiates his services to exorcise Kurapika's Judgment Chain from Chrollo Lucilfer. Abengane leaves Greed Island with Hisoka and successfully removes the chain, as confirmed by Chrollo's reappearance without the curse in the Succession Contest arc. Due to Kurapika's Post Mortem Nen conditions, the resulting Nen beast from this exorcism persists indefinitely.
A Conjurer, his primary ability involves curse removal through Nen beast summoning. The ritual requires a forest setting, with the campfire's intensity indicating the curse's power. He cannot exorcise curses from deceased casters. His combat capabilities include basic Nen techniques, and his perceptiveness allows him to deduce game strategies, memorize all Greed Island spell cards quickly, and analyze enemy abilities. He is among fewer than 10 global exorcists capable of handling Post Mortem Nen.
Abengane's story continues beyond Greed Island, transitioning into high-stakes exorcism work for influential clients like the Phantom Troupe. His role in removing Chrollo's chain remains his most significant documented feat, cementing his reputation in the series' lore.
