TV-Series
Description
Mai Ishikawa shows consistent kindness, most notably when assisting Tsuyoshi Igawa during his search for missing money by offering a flashlight—an act forging their significant connection through its lasting positive impact. Academically accomplished, she excels to the level of securing work as a substitute teacher. Complementing her intellect is her physical skill in aikido, where she holds a first-degree belt. She demonstrates this proficiency by impressing Keiko Igawa with a technique that sends Tsuyoshi flying.

Her inherently friendly personality drives her to actively help others and de-escalate conflicts through dialogue. This gentle nature aligns with her aikido practice focused on harmony and makes her Tsuyoshi's family-favored match. A childhood flashback reveals a tomboy past; she adopted a more feminine appearance upon learning her then-crush Kiyoshi preferred it. Recognizing those feelings as unrequited, she transitioned into a supportive friendship with Kiyoshi, mutually encouraging romantic pursuits elsewhere.

Mutual admiration between Mai and Tsuyoshi evolves into romance after a period of pining. They marry in the series finale, their partnership portrayed as happy and fulfilling. A sequel manga details their life together in new careers and as cherished parents to twins. Her father strongly approves of the relationship and remains closely present throughout her life stages. Beyond a notable vulnerability to mice, Mai maintains balanced resilience, navigating career changes, marriage, and motherhood while retaining her core traits of intelligence, physical skill, and kindness.
