Description
Yusaku Godai starts as a 19-year-old rōnin living at Maison Ikkoku after failing college entrance exams. He considers moving due to noisy neighbors but remains upon meeting Kyoko Otonashi, the new building manager, sparking instant romantic attraction. Physically, he appears tall, lean, and handsome with brown hair covering his forehead and neck, typically wearing a "Boy's An Non" insignia jacket.
His personality blends kindness with indecisiveness and distractibility. Frequent daydreams trigger public mishaps or embarrassment. Fellow tenants—Yotsuya, Akemi Roppongi, and Hanae Ichinose—exploit his weak will, hijacking his room for gatherings and stealing his belongings. Despite this, he commits to academic growth, later enrolling in a third-tier college with Kyoko's encouragement and eventually becoming a kindergarten teacher.
His romantic pursuit fixates on Kyoko. Early hesitation to confess feelings breeds misunderstandings. A drunken declaration prompts Kyoko to slap him after neighbors dismiss it as insincere. Unwillingness to firmly reject coworker Kozue Nanao misleads her into assuming a relationship, complicating his courtship of Kyoko when others perceive Kozue as his girlfriend. Rivalry with tennis instructor Shun Mitaka heightens the love triangle tensions.
Over time, he matures substantially. He tutors Kyoko's niece Ikuko and navigates advances from Ibuki Yagami, a student at Kyoko's alma mater where he teaches. Ibuki's bold pursuit contrasts Kyoko's reserve, inadvertently clarifying Kyoko's feelings. Persistent mix-ups—particularly involving Kozue and Akemi—cause temporary splits from Kyoko. Ultimately, he affirms his unwavering devotion, stating Kyoko has been his sole focus since their first meeting. They marry and have a daughter, Haruka.
The OVA *Through the Passing of the Seasons* revisits his relationship milestones with Kyoko via series footage, underscoring his evolution from insecure student to dedicated husband and father. His background includes briefly staying with friend Sakamoto during Maison Ikkoku conflicts. His surname "Godai" (meaning "five generations") aligns with his room number, mirroring the series' naming patterns.
