TV Special
Description
Shun Mitaka stands as the principal romantic rival to Yusaku Godai for the affections of Kyoko Otonashi. In stark contrast to Godai, he hails from a wealthy, educated, and elite family. He works as a tennis coach driven more by a passion for the sport than by need. His age is established as 26 at the story's outset, a fact later confirmed by his parents. He is remarkably handsome and often illustrated with a distinctive sparkle on his teeth when he smiles.

Mitaka meets Kyoko when she begins taking lessons at his tennis club early on and immediately starts to court her. His most significant initial obstacle is a profound fear of dogs, which creates complications whenever Kyoko's large dog, Soichiro, is near. Despite a sincere devotion to Kyoko, Mitaka is very popular with other women and maintains something of a reputation as a womanizer, which is not entirely unearned; he has admitted to dating many women. Kyoko's mother strongly approves of him as a potential husband for her daughter.

He recognizes Godai as his rival, and their relationship is typically antagonistic, though Mitaka's actions fluctuate between magnanimous and condescending, often depending on whether Kyoko is present. He does not hesitate to use Kozue Nanao, a woman interested in Godai, as a wedge between Godai and Kyoko. Despite this rivalry, the two men occasionally bond over their shared frustration with Kyoko's reluctance to commit.

Kyoko generally likes Mitaka and considers him a serious suitor, though she often feels apprehensive about his forwardness and occasionally pressured by his advances. His motivations are sometimes unclear, debated between a genuine interest in Kyoko herself and a desire to save her from what he perceives as a degrading life as a widow, casting him in a "knight in shining armor" role.

As the series progresses, external pressure from his family pushes him toward an arranged marriage with Asuna Kujo, from another wealthy family. Mitaka initially resists. A significant turning point follows a drunken night he misremembers, leading him to believe he slept with Asuna. When she later announces a pregnancy, he takes responsibility and proposes, only to later discover it was actually her dog that was pregnant. This sequence of events leads him to the full realization that he has loved Asuna since their first meeting. He ultimately marries her, promising to never make her feel second-best. The series concludes with them expecting their third child, having already had twin daughters named Moe and Mie.
