Description
Devil Z is a non-corporeal energy entity of immense power originating from an undefined point in the far reaches of the universe. Existing primarily as a pulsating globe of iridescent energy, it wields catastrophic energy attacks known as Devil Power, capable of inflicting severe pain, causing natural disasters, and potentially eradicating all organic life on a planetary scale. Devil Power also purges organic matter from Transtector-bonded individuals, converting them into fully robotic beings.
Long before the series events, Devil Z formulated a plan to create the ultimate lifeform, termed Godmasters, by fusing humans with lifeless Transtector bodies. This fusion would grant control over the universe's three primal energies: Tenchōkon (heavenly energy), Chichōkon (earthly energy), and Jinchōkon (human life energy). To achieve this, Devil Z stole eight Transtectors—including one intended for Optimus Prime’s revival—from a facility in G Nebula 89. It transported these Transtectors to Earth, scattering seven to absorb Chichōkon while retaining the largest. Devil Z then entered hibernation within an ocean trench for thousands of years, awaiting the optimal time to activate its scheme.
After Scorponok's defeat, Devil Z awakened in the early 21st century. It captured and brainwashed Scorponok (who had reconstructed himself as BlackZarak), placing space-based Decepticon forces under its control. Concurrently, Devil Z freed the Decepticon Pretenders Blood, Dauros, and Gilmer from ancient prisons where Autobot Pretenders had sealed them. It then recruited the human couple Giga and Mega—reportedly reviving them after a drowning incident—merging them with the largest Transtector to create Overlord, its "Ambassador of Destruction." Overlord was tasked with locating the remaining Transtectors, leading to the recruitment of the German brothers Hydra and Buster as additional Decepticon Godmasters.
Devil Z initially operated from the shadows, residing atop a tentacled dais within the Decepticons' underwater base. It permitted subordinates to wield its power for specific tasks, like reanimating the deceased or inciting animal frenzies, but demonstrated a volatile temperament, punishing failures or perceived disrespect with brutal energy assaults. Its plans were disrupted when the remaining Transtectors bonded with humans allied with the Autobots, notably the trucker Ginrai. This forced Devil Z to adopt a more direct approach, summoning BlackZarak to Earth to bolster its forces.
After setbacks including God Ginrai's (an upgraded Ginrai) defeat of Overlord and BlackZarak on the Moon, Devil Z initiated global extermination campaigns against humanity, Operation M1 and Operation M2. The latter involved deploying the atmosphere-destroying "Death Para-Machine." These operations stemmed from Devil Z’s escalating fear of humanity's latent Jinchōkon potential. When the Autobots infiltrated the Decepticon base, Devil Z abandoned its energy form, manifesting first as an embryonic creature before merging with BlackZarak as a hidden Headmaster component beneath the Transtector's helmet. This fusion significantly amplified its power.
As the possessed BlackZarak, Devil Z ravaged continents with Devil Thunder, converting Hydra, Buster, and later Overlord into purely robotic entities—a process that killed Giga and Mega due to their revival being tied to its power. Its cruelty, particularly the near-fatal beating of Hydra and Buster, prompted Overlord’s betrayal. During the final battle in Antarctica, God Ginrai decapitated BlackZarak, but Devil Z reconfigured the body into a twin-headed hydra form (Heads of Heaven and Earth). It attempted to absorb Jinchōkon to form a third head (Head of Humanity) and become a "Demonic Beast," but was thwarted by the Autobot Pretenders. A combined assault by the Autobots, former Decepticons, and humans—channeling Chōkon Power—destroyed the hydra body. Exposed in its energy form, Devil Z was obliterated by God Ginrai’s Final Fire Guts.
Devil Z’s death dissolved the bonds between humans and Transtectors, rendering the human Godmasters and Headmaster Juniors powerless. However, the Transtectors, imprinted with their human partners' personalities, gained full sentience as true Transformers and departed Earth. Giga and Mega, dependent on Devil Z’s power, perished upon its destruction.
In other continuities, Devil Z was revived within the Transformers Legends universe by Mindwipe to empower the Decepticons. It subsequently brainwashed Megatron into Galvatron, controlled Blackzarak, and orchestrated the destruction of the Legends World before being defeated again by Super Ginrai. Supplementary materials offer expanded origins, depicting Devil Z as an embodiment of evil energy purged from the Matrix of Leadership during the Transformers' rebellion against the Quintessons, later becoming corrupted by Earth's Angolmois Energy.
