Description
Ranger, a former forest patrolman and Mountie, lived a solitary life in a self-built log cabin within the Canadian Rockies. He held a deep appreciation for Earth's natural environment, finding wonder in sunsets and mountain snowfalls, yet harbored a particular aversion to insects, especially cockroaches. His simple life away from urban centers included creative pursuits like whittling and painting. Polite, warm, and approachable, Ranger formed friendships easily and readily assisted strangers. Despite his gentle nature, he possessed fierce protectiveness when those he cared about were threatened and demonstrated proficiency with firearms, alongside knowledge of geography and history.
During a routine patrol, Ranger discovered a mysterious glowing black rock beneath the snow. He stored it in his barn while repeatedly painting the mountain where he found it. This rock was later revealed as an inactive Transtector, a robotic body intended for a Godmaster. His first encounter with the Autobots Ginrai, Lightfoot, Metalhawk, and Lander occurred when he warned them of dangerous cave-ins near a mineshaft; they proceeded regardless. He later provided directions to the Decepticon Bullhorn, unaware of his allegiance, and shared fishing bait with Autobot Headmaster Juniors Shūta and Cab. Minerva briefly suspected Ranger of Decepticon collaboration after seeing him with Bullhorn.
When Decepticon Headmaster Juniors attacked Ranger's cabin and stole the Transtector rock, Ranger witnessed the Autobots transforming during the pursuit. Discovering his injured horse in the barn's wreckage ignited his fury, driving him to chase the Transformers armed with his rifle. In the ensuing confrontation, he shot the Decepticon Godmaster Hydra in the eye, prompting Buster to destroy the cliff beneath him. As Ranger fell, Ginrai instructed him to activate latent Godmaster abilities using the command "Masterforce." Ranger complied, manifesting Godmaster armor and merging with the Transtector—now transformed into a white and red Baja buggy—to become a robot for the first time. Following the Decepticons' retreat, Ranger accepted the Autobots' invitation to join them, despite his cabin's destruction.
As an Autobot Godmaster, Ranger gained the ability to manipulate Chōkon Power, enabling techniques like the "Heat Sand Attack," which launched waves of superheated silica to erode enemy armor into sand. His Transtector functioned as a durable all-terrain vehicle capable of underground travel, equipped with a roof-mounted "Napalm Blaster" rifle. Ranger joined several key missions: searching for the next Godmaster in Europe, where he held off Decepticon Headmaster Juniors until reinforcements arrived; battling the Decepticon Pretender Dauros; destroying the Seacon Overbite during an Atlan Island rescue; defending the Godbomber construction site; supporting Lightfoot against Hydra and Buster after Lightfoot's father was kidnapped; engaging in conflicts involving the Decepticon double-agent Clouder; and contributing to battles against BlackZarak and the Death Para-Machine threat.
After Devil Z's destruction, the bond between Ranger and his Transtector dissolved. The human Ranger reverted to normal life, while the Transtector gained independent sentience imprinted with his personality and memories. This robotic Ranger continued serving as an Autobot, relocating to the G Nebula under Ginrai's command. He reported on Transtector factory activity in the Legends comic, defended against Overlord's attacks, and was present among high-ranking Autobots during Dai Atlas's appointment as Supreme Commander in the Zone OVA. Ranger's human component transformed into an engine block capable of powering larger Transtectors. A mail-order variant reproduced the original Joyride toy's colors. His technical specifications noted high endurance and courage ratings, listing the "Heated Sand Attack" as a final combat technique. His profile reiterated his love for nature and knowledge of geology and history.
