Description
Soundwave operates as the Decepticon Communications Officer under Megatron's command. He detects magnetic fluctuations from a hidden Autobot base and deploys cassette minions including Ravage, Laserbeak, and Ratbat to investigate. Ratbat infiltrates the base and discovers the Autobots constructing Metroplex, a mobile fortress city, leading Megatron to launch an assault with Decepticon combiner teams.
He commands a legion of cassette-form minions stored in his chest compartment, deploying them for reconnaissance, espionage, and combat. His symbiotic relationship with these troops involves providing transportation and shelter while they execute critical missions. Key minions include Ravage, Laserbeak, Ratbat, Rumble, and Frenzy.
Soundwave originated as a gladiator in Kaon's arenas, where he came closest to defeating Megatron in combat. His combat prowess remains formidable, utilizing tentacles for unarmed combat, system hacking, or excavation. He later became instrumental in Megatron's rise and the early Decepticon movement.
His abilities include intercepting and jamming transmissions across the entire energy spectrum, hacking computer systems, and monitoring planetary communications. He decodes electrical impulses from organic and mechanical beings to effectively "read minds," using gathered information for blackmail to maintain high status within the Decepticon hierarchy.
Soundwave exhibits unwavering loyalty to Megatron, distinguishing him from other high-ranking Decepticons like Starscream. He monitors the Nemesis for conspiracies and reports treachery directly to Megatron, securing his position as a confidant often regarded as the true second-in-command despite official rankings.
In other media, Soundwave survives the Unicron conflict and temporarily assumes Decepticon leadership in multiple timelines. In a 2008 future scenario, he reluctantly accepts Scourge and Cyclonus as leaders under duress but becomes permanent leader after their departure. Following his apparent destruction during a final clash with Blaster in the Arctic, his remains are recovered and rebuilt by Decepticon Headmaster leader Zarak using technology from the planet Master. Reborn as Soundblaster, he retains his role under Galvatron and Scorponok, with a subtly altered cassette dynamic resembling a father-son relationship.
