Description
Tiny Tim Cratchit is the young son of Bob Cratchit, Ebenezer Scrooge's underpaid clerk. He lives with his parents and siblings—Martha, Belinda, Peter, and two others—in poverty, a direct result of Scrooge's meager wages to his father. Tim suffers from an unspecified illness requiring a crutch and an iron frame to support his limbs. Speculated by scholars as renal tubular acidosis, rickets, or Pott's disease, his condition stems from malnutrition and the poor living conditions of impoverished Victorian London. Despite his physical challenges, he exhibits exceptional kindness and optimism. He is notably recognized for his blessing, "God bless us, every one!" during the family's Christmas dinner. His thoughtful nature extends to hoping his visibility in church as a "cripple" might remind congregants of Jesus Christ's healing miracles. He is characterized as patient, mild, and beloved by his family. During Scrooge's journey with the Ghost of Christmas Present, Tim's fragility and the family's inability to afford treatment are revealed, with the Ghost warning of Tim's impending death without intervention. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come then shows a future where Tiny Tim has died, a pivotal vision contributing to Scrooge's transformation. Following Scrooge's redemption, he ensures the Cratchit family receives financial support and medical care for Tiny Tim. The narrative explicitly states that Tim survives, and Scrooge becomes a "second father" to him.
