Description
Nina Purpleton, born on the Moon, worked as a mobile suit engineer for Anaheim Electronics by age 21. She served as head engineer for the Gundam Development Project, overseeing the creation and fine-tuning of the RX-78GP01 "Zephyranthes" and RX-78GP02A "Physalis" prototypes. Nina displayed fierce protectiveness toward these mobile suits, obsessively monitoring their performance data and reacting negatively to perceived interference. This dedication caused friction with Earth Federation personnel and colleagues, including test pilot Kou Uraki, whom she initially found immature and irritating.
Despite their rocky start, Nina developed romantic feelings for Kou over time aboard the Pegasus-class carrier Albion, where she volunteered to assist in recovering the stolen GP02A. She played a crucial role in identifying the Delaz Fleet's plan to drop a colony on Earth. Her motivations were complicated by a past romantic relationship with Zeon ace pilot Anavel Gato, who deserted her on the Moon before the conflict. This unresolved attachment drove her actions significantly, culminating during Operation Stardust when she intervened to prevent Kou from killing Gato by firing Gato's handgun at Kou.
Following the conflict, Nina reconciled with Kou and was stationed with him at Oakley Base in North America. She later joined a top-secret Anaheim Electronics mobile suit development division led by Director Kurena Hacksell. This division contributed designs for multiple factions, including the AEUG, Axis Zeon, Neo Zeon, and Londo Bell.
Characterized as a workaholic, Nina often prioritized responsibilities over personal needs. She struggled with stress management and concealed vulnerabilities, including her lingering attachment to Gato and fears for Kou's combat safety. Her technical expertise remained a defining trait throughout her career.
