Description
Mariemaia Khushrenada, publicly known as Mariemaia Barton before the Mariemaia Rebellion, was presented as the daughter of Treize Khushrenada and Leia Barton. Born in After Colony 189, she lost her mother at age two and was raised solely by her maternal grandfather, Dekim Barton. Dekim instilled in her the belief that her destiny was to fulfill her father's legacy by ruling the Earth Sphere. Unbeknownst to Mariemaia, Dekim viewed her primarily as a figurehead for his own ambitions, intending to rule through her once Operation Meteor succeeded.

From a young age, Mariemaia exhibited extreme confidence and pride, behaving with an unnatural dignity for a child. She often gave the impression of looking down on others, maintaining a facade of unwavering authority. However, her underlying childishness occasionally surfaced, as she was only seven years old during the rebellion. A key emotional anchor was a music box left by her mother, which she kept constantly.

In December A.C. 196, one year after Treize's death and the formation of the pacifist Earth Sphere Unified Nation (ESUN), Dekim initiated their plan. Mariemaia's Army drugged and kidnapped ESUN Vice Foreign Minister Relena Darlian during a diplomatic visit to Colony X-18999. Mariemaia subsequently broadcast a declaration of independence for the colony and war against the ESUN, revealing her identity as Treize's heir. Her forces, equipped with hundreds of advanced Serpent mobile suits, swiftly captured the ESUN presidential office in Brussels, securing it within an underground shelter. During the occupation, Mariemaia lectured Relena on history's cyclical nature—war, peace, and revolution repeating like an "endless waltz"—asserting her intent to break this cycle through her rule.

The rebellion culminated in the Battle of Brussels. While Preventers and Gundam pilots engaged her army, Mariemaia remained entrenched in the shelter, confident in its invulnerability. Heero Yuy, piloting the damaged Wing Zero, targeted the shelter directly after confirming its security systems were active. His precise attacks breached the blast doors, causing partial collapse. Confronted by Relena about her visible terror, Mariemaia's composure shattered. In the ensuing chaos, Dekim attempted to execute Relena for undermining their control. Mariemaia intervened, taking the bullet meant for Relena and collapsing. Dekim callously dismissed her as expendable—hinting she might be unrelated to Treize—before being killed by his own officer for betraying Treize's legacy. Mariemaia survived, paralyzed and wheelchair-bound.

Following the rebellion, Mariemaia expressed remorse to Relena and underwent significant character development, adopting a more humble demeanor. Lady Une took her into care and escorted her to visit Treize's grave in A.C. 197, symbolizing her departure from Dekim's influence.

Her biological lineage remains ambiguous. While some records affirm her as Treize and Leia's daughter, conflicting evidence exists. Dekim implied she was artificially created, declaring he could "make another Mariemaia." Physical inconsistencies—such as her hair and eye color differing from both parents—and suggestions she might have been an unrelated child "picked up off the street" further cloud her origins.
