OVA
Description
Gofer acts as a primary antagonist for the Bacterian Empire. Initially presented as a fragment or underling of the larger Bacterian entity, Gofer possesses regenerative capabilities; destruction scatters pieces that can mutate into new, independent copies across the universe. This occurred after defeat in Gradius II, where a surviving seed regenerated into a battleship resembling the Xaerous Fortress, reforming into a new iteration seen in Gradius IV. Gofer claims every dispersed piece retains potential for rebirth as a full copy.
Attack patterns vary across media. In the Gradius II arcade version and Gradius IV, Gofer remains largely inert as a final boss. Conversely, the Gradius II NES version and Nemesis 3 depict Gofer actively projecting energy balls or lightning bolts from its mouth. Vulnerability also differs: tissues located above its form serve as weak points in most versions, resembling the Xaerous Brain's mechanics. The NES iteration uniquely requires targeting the eye or mouth directly, as its contextual tissues are indestructible background elements.
The Salamander OVA presents a distinct narrative origin. Here, Gofer manifests as a colossal organic construct engineered by Paula. This version exists incomplete and mentally unstable. Paula orchestrates Stephanie McBain's kidnapping to forcibly transform her into a cybernetic brain for merging with Gofer, creating Bacterian's ultimate weapon. Following Stephanie's rescue by Dan and Lord British, Paula fuses with Gofer herself. This act triggers a metamorphosis where the combined entity transforms into a powerful being known as Phoenix. The OVA's storyline and Gofer's origins are separate from the core Gradius series canon.
Gofer's name reflects its initial perceived role; "Gofer" implies an errand boy or subordinate, suggesting service to a higher Bacterian authority. Simultaneously, the subtitle "Gofer's Ambition" indicates underlying personal aspirations or agency beyond mere servitude. Development history notes initial concepts included more complex attacks, such as eye lasers, but disagreements within the Gradius II team led to the finalized, often passive, boss behavior.
