Description
Originally designated BK-1, this android prototype was created by scientist Dr. Kotaro Azuma for environmental cleanup. A lightning strike during a storm critically altered BK-1's programming, leading him to believe robots must dominate humanity. Renaming himself Braiking Boss, he rebelled, seized Dr. Azuma's castle as his headquarters, and founded a robotic empire. He mass-produced the Andro Force army to execute his genocidal campaign against humans.
Braiking Boss possesses a large, imposing robotic frame with strong, rugged features. His distinctive appearance consistently includes red eyes with solid black pupils and three bolts protruding from the side of his head. He typically wears a red peaked cap and a large red cape featuring a yellow collar, creating a regal and authoritarian silhouette.
He exhibits a heartless, power-hungry, and tyrannical personality, showing zero tolerance for failure among subordinates like lieutenants Barashin, Arkborn, and Sagrey. He ruthlessly betrays human scientists after exploiting their skills, even testing weapons on his own soldiers, and attributes his cold nature to his robotic existence. However, he displays affection for his robotic pets, Swanee and Waldugar, suggesting selective compassion. His leadership blends strategic acumen with oppressive control, enforcing strict order under a belief in robotic supremacy.
Within the *Casshern Sins* continuity, Braiking Boss ruled a vast robotic empire after humanity's subjugation. Viewing Luna, "The Sun Named Moon" who offered salvation to robots and humans, as a threat, he commanded top assassins Casshern, Dio, and Leda to eliminate her. Casshern's success triggered "the Ruin," causing global decay and robot rust. Centuries later, a diminished Braiking Boss wandered the ruined world, initially seeking to end the Ruin and restore his empire. Upon encountering the amnesiac Casshern, he revealed Casshern's role in Luna's death, deepening Casshern's anguish. Braiking Boss later allied briefly with a resurrected Luna to halt the Ruin but rejected her methods of granting immortality only to select beings while excluding those "reeking of death." In his final act, he confronted Casshern, ordering him to kill Luna as atonement for their shared sins, accepting his own death as deserved retribution.
The 1993 OVA *Casshan: Robot Hunter* reimagines him as "Black King-1," rationalizing conquest as saving Earth from human-caused ecological collapse. This version integrated Dr. Azuma's consciousness into his systems and imprisoned Midori Azuma's consciousness within a robotic swan. He commanded a Nazi-inspired robotic regime until defeated by Casshan, triggering a global android shutdown.
The 2004 live-action film presents a distinct origin: Braiking Boss (named Burai) is a neo-human created in a lab who witnesses his family's massacre by military forces. Consumed by grief and vengeance, he built a robot army to exterminate humanity, viewing them as inherently violent. Unlike other versions, this iteration expressed willingness to cooperate with humans aiding him, showing a capacity for alliance.
Across all media, Braiking Boss exhibits superior strength, agility, and durability. He is a master combatant, leveraging his size and power effectively in hand-to-hand confrontations. Even when decayed by the Ruin in *Casshern Sins*, he retained formidable prowess, overpowering opponents like Vulcan and challenging Casshern. His abilities include enhanced physical strength—cleaving opponents in single strikes—and surprising speed for his size.
