Description
Dr. Sakezo Sado fulfills the role of ship's surgeon aboard the Space Battleship Yamato. His background lies in veterinary medicine, a field where he experienced limited success before joining the crew, yet this training forms the foundation for his current duty providing healthcare to the human crew during their missions. Sado frequently delivers comic relief, often through physical humor stemming from his pronounced fondness for Japanese rice wine (sake). He exhibits notable attachment to his bottle, taking care to secure it even during demanding ship operations like warp travel. Despite this carefree exterior, he displays deep seriousness and dedication concerning his medical responsibilities. This intensity surfaces most clearly when he forcefully advocates for Captain Okita to undergo necessary surgery despite resistance. He willingly offers advice but shifts to earnest admonishment when confronting behavior he judges irresponsible.

During the events of *Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato*, Sado participates in the memorial gathering at Hero's Hill honoring the late Captain Okita. He arrives early, settling at the base of the statue to drink sake alongside his pet cat, Mimi. Later, he chastises crew members Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori for their tardiness, despite having earlier implied their absence might be excusable. During the formal salute, Sado employs a traditional military gesture, contrasting with the fist-over-heart "Star Force" salute used by the rest of the crew, including Mimi. His dialogue in the post-ceremony discussion reveals concern about potential new threats to Earth, as he wonders aloud whether Captain Okita's spirit might be warning them.

This character embodies a recurring archetype within creator Leiji Matsumoto's works, appearing in multiple series such as *Wadachi* (1973-1974), *Torajima no Miime*, and *Danguard Ace*. Derivatives of this archetype also exist, notably Dr. Zero in *Captain Harlock*. The character's name incorporates intentional wordplay: "Sado" references a star system, while "Sakezo" utilizes kanji associated with sake brewing.
