He then shed his identity to become Vitalis, living as an itinerant street performer. Traveling across France with a troupe of trained animals—dogs Capi, Dolce, and Zerbino, and the monkey Joli-Coeur—he earned a modest living through public performances.

Motivated by a desire for redemption regarding past regrets, Vitalis purchased Remi from Jerome Barberin, rescuing the boy from potential exploitation. He became both a parental figure and mentor to Remi, teaching him literacy, music, and performance skills while instilling values of dignity, resilience, and self-reliance. Despite a stern exterior, Vitalis showed deep compassion, particularly in his commitment to shielding Remi from hardship and ensuring his education.
