Description
Koichi, a Japanese schoolboy bearing family names such as Yamano, Furumi, or Kamiya across different adaptations, begins with an ordinary life until he learns he is the chosen reincarnation and distant descendant of an ancient alien called Babel. This entity crashed on Earth 5,000 years ago and built the original Tower of Babel in an unsuccessful effort to contact his home world. Through this heritage, Koichi gains superhuman intelligence, great physical power, and psychic talents like telepathy, telekinesis, and pyrokinesis.

Authorized by the tower’s computer as the true master of the Tower of Babel, Koichi takes the title Babel II and the mission to protect Earth. He is aided by three guardians inherited from his predecessor: Rodem, a shape-shifter often appearing as a black panther or a woman; Ropross, a robotic pterodactyl-like creature with supersonic flight and rocket launchers; and Poseidon, a giant humanoid robot armed with lasers and torpedoes that usually rises from the ocean.

His chief enemy is Yomi, a ruthless monarch and another distant descendant of Babel who holds similar supernatural abilities but was rejected by the tower for his amorality. Yomi pursues global domination from hidden bases worldwide, deploying scientists, engineers, psychics, cyborgs, and advanced robot weapons like the Baran combat robots. Their conflict defines the struggle between protection and domination.

Koichi shares a key bond with Yumiko Furumi, a classmate and daughter of the doctor who adopted him after he lost his parents. In some versions, she is his cousin. He also receives assistance from Igarashi, head of the National Security Bureau, and the investigator Igano.

In the parallel universe sequel *His Name Is 101*, Koichi is designated “101” and held in a secret CIA lab. His blood has healing properties but is used to create artificial superhumans, forcing Koichi to break free and hunt these espers, often alone while his guardians are confined by the CIA underground.

Another sequel, *Babel II: The Returner*, shows Koichi fighting years later against an upgraded Yomi and the full military might of the USA. His guardians Ropross and Poseidon receive major upgrades for these battles.

Throughout his journeys, Koichi is driven by a sense of duty to use his power in defense of humanity, though his approach can be ruthless, such as when he eliminates Yomi’s followers or exploits Yomi’s concern for subordinates to gain advantage. Extensive use of his psychic abilities exacts a physical toll, risking weakness and accelerated aging for both himself and Yomi.
