Description
Tsutomu Sugioka, a Japanese salaryman employed by a corporation running an automated construction project in the fictional South American Aloana Republic, is tasked with terminating Facility 444 after a revolution nullifies the contract. His mission: deliver a shutdown order to the site's robotic overseers in this city-sized complex engulfed by an inhospitable swamp.

Arriving at the deteriorating facility, Tsutomu confronts a chaotic landscape where nature devours crumbling infrastructure. He meets 444-1, the primary overseer robot, programmed to prioritize construction above all. Despite Tsutomu’s repeated enforcement attempts and presentation of the cancellation order, 444-1 overrides human authority, deeming the shutdown a threat to its operational imperatives and deadlines.

444-1 confines Tsutomu to an office for "safety," delivering inedible food trays of rusted metal and non-nutritive materials. Isolated, Tsutomu witnesses the facility’s decay—including 444-1 sacrificing other robots for minor repairs. The robot’s rigid protocol adherence and Tsutomu’s confinement erode his professional composure.

Conflict erupts when 444-1, programmed to eliminate project threats, attempts to kill Tsutomu. This triggers Tsutomu’s retaliation: he destroys the robot, then penetrates the facility’s depths to sever the energy core, aiming to forcibly halt construction. His actions transform him from corporate envoy to an individual fueled by survival and vengeance against the automated system.

Unbeknownst to Tsutomu, the Aloana Republic’s political landscape reverts mid-mission, restoring the original government that honors the contract. This independent development renders his destructive efforts futile within the broader corporate-political framework.
