Motoko Naniwa, also known as Moko, first appeared in Fujio Akatsuka's manga as Akko-chan's best friend, recurring across multiple adaptations. Her full name replaced an early manga name, Tomoko Ina, potentially avoiding direct reference to Akatsuka's then-wife Tomoko Inao. Physically, Moko is a tall, slender girl with long black hair typically tied into braids secured by large bows. She wears dresses, long socks, and black "Mary Jane" shoes. Her eyes initially featured sclerae in early manga chapters and the 1969 anime, shifting to a monochromatic, shiny style in later manga redraws. Moko exhibits an energetic, loud, and stern personality. She frequently quarrels with Akko-chan but reconciles quickly, displaying abrupt jealousy. As the more tomboyish of the duo, she contrasts Akko's evolving demeanor. Academically weak—notably scoring zero on a math test—she excels in physical confrontations, fighting boys without hesitation. She often disciplines her younger brother Kankichi for cowardice or mischief by hitting him, yet shows protective sisterly instincts when he faces genuine trouble. Her primary role is Akko-chan's closest friend; their relationship balances frequent arguments with deep loyalty. Moko's family includes her parents and Kankichi. Her mother appears stern but kind, often heavyset with glasses, while her father resembles an older Kankichi. Moko interacts with neighborhood children like Chikako, whom Kankichi admires, and opposes Taisho's gang. Moko's character evolved across media. The original 1962–1965 manga featured eyes with sclerae and less aggression. The 1969 anime altered her eye design and amplified tomboy traits. Later 1988 and 1998 anime series increased her aggression to contrast Akko's growing tomboyishness. She appeared in other Akatsuka works via his "Star System," including cameos in *Osomatsu-kun* and *Furious Ataro*; a counterpart named Himeka Ayanokouji replaced her in the 1990 *Ataro* anime.
