Description
Dr. Saotome is the director of the Saotome Institute and the foremost researcher of the mysterious energy known as the Getter Rays. His most significant achievement is the creation of the Getter Robo, a giant super robot powered by these rays, along with several of its subsequent models. Beyond his professional identity, he is the father of Tatsuhito, Michiru, and Genki Saotome.

Physically, Dr. Saotome is typically depicted as a short, older man with a broad build, gray hair, and a beard or mustache. His standard attire consists of a white lab coat over a shirt and tie, but he is almost always seen wearing traditional Japanese geta sandals instead of regular shoes, adding to his distinctive appearance.

The personality of Dr. Saotome varies considerably depending on the specific continuity or adaptation, presenting two primary characterizations. In the original 1970s television anime, he embodies the classic archetype of the benevolent and wise professor. He is kind-hearted, genuinely good, and serves as a supportive mentor to the Getter Team. This version is generally stable and well-meaning, though he does possess a flashy side and a surprising enjoyment of risqué decorations, such as the nude picture hung in his laboratory.

However, in Ken Ishikawa's original manga and several later adaptations, Dr. Saotome is portrayed as a far more complex and intimidating figure, often described as a mad scientist. This version of the character is ruthless and pragmatic, willing to go to any extreme to accomplish his goals. He tests potential pilot Ryoma Nagare by sending armed thugs to kill him and does not hesitate to eliminate staff members who have been compromised by the enemy, even if that includes his own brainwashed son, Tatsuhito. Despite this cold exterior, he is not completely heartless; he privately mourns their deaths and maintains a deeply buried hope for humanity's future. His obsessive research into the Getter Rays gradually consumes him, leading to increasing mental instability as he delves further into their mysteries. In contrast, some adaptations, such as the Devolution storyline, present him as a more stern yet compassionate man who feels genuine regret for involving his children in his dangerous work.

As the creator of the Getter Robo, Dr. Saotome is the world's leading expert on Getter Rays and their applications. His expertise extends to the development of Getter Alloy, the super-strong metal used in his robots, and the continuous improvement of his machines to perform seemingly impossible feats, such as high-speed travel. While his primary role is as a scientist and advisor, he has also shown a willingness and ability to pilot a Getter Machine himself, though doing so places an immense physical burden on his body.

His role in the story is that of the architect of the central conflict, as his creation of Getter Robo draws the attention of various existential threats, including the Dinosaur Empire and the Hyakki Empire. He is responsible for recruiting and overseeing the Getter Team, the pilots who defend the Earth. His key relationships are with these pilots, particularly Ryoma Nagare and Hayato Jin, whom he comes to view as surrogate sons in some versions, and with his daughters, Michiru and Genki. The tragic death of Michiru during a test of the Getter Robo G in several continuities becomes a pivotal event that fuels his descent into obsession and madness.

Throughout the various Getter Robo stories, Dr. Saotome undergoes a significant and often tragic character trajectory. He begins as a brilliant but well-intentioned scientist seeking to harness Getter Rays for space exploration and planetary defense. In the manga, this evolves into an all-consuming fixation that alienates him from his humanity. In the Getter Robo Armageddon OVA, this descent is complete, as he becomes infected by the parasitic Invaders and is resurrected as their puppet, serving as the primary antagonist. In this form, he pilots a powerful bio-organic Metal Beast and wages war against humanity. Yet, even in this villainous state, a remnant of the original man remains. In his final moments, he often regains his sanity and expresses gratitude to the Getter Team for stopping him, before being destroyed or fusing with the Getter Rays themselves. In timelines like Getter Robo Arc, he is said to have perished years earlier in an accident that destroyed his institute, leaving behind a powerful legacy that his successor, Hayato Jin, continues to uphold.
