Description
Kento Lei Fan, also known as Shu Rei Fuan or Xiu Li Huang, is a central figure whose ancestry traces back to immigrants from China during the Ching Dynasty. He belongs to a clan overseen by an elder called Grandfather and is destined to one day lead it.
Born on September 1, 1973, in Yokohama’s Chinatown, Kento is the eldest of five children. His siblings are sisters Rinfi and Chun Fa, and brothers Yun and Meiryu. The family enjoys prosperity thanks to his father Chanrun’s successful Chinese restaurant chain. His mother, a master of Chinese kung fu, started training Kento from a young age.
Kento possesses grey, dark blue, or ash purple hair and blue eyes. In the television series, he stands 164 cm tall and weighs 62 kg. By the time of the Message OVA, he grows to 170 cm while maintaining the same weight. His blood type is O.
His temperament is hot-headed and stubborn, often driving him to leap into fights without planning, depending instead on raw power. This impulsiveness occasionally results in errors, like being tricked into attacking an ally. Still, he demonstrates fierce loyalty to his friends, a powerful sense of justice, and remains unpretentious despite his family’s wealth. He is passionate about food and often brings it up in conversation. His interests span judo, kung fu, rugby, arm wrestling machines, mountain climbing, and Tai Chi Gen. He dislikes certain foods, such as devil’s tongue and swallow’s nest.
He wields the Kongo armor—also referred to as Hardrock or Stone armor—which is orange with brown and white details. Tied to the element of Earth, it embodies the virtue of Gi, or Justice, and draws greatest strength in mountains or deserts. His chief weapon is a bladed staff that splits into three sections, operating like a naginata or nunchaku in close quarters. His signature technique, the Iron Rock Crusher (Gan Tessai), unleashes a quake-like force through the ground.
A key event in his youth was staying as an exchange student at a shrine run by Rowen Hashiba’s grandfather, where he first met Rowen and formed a lasting bond.
In the initial conflict, Kento joins fellow warriors in Tokyo to confront the Dynasty. To master his armor’s spirit, he must defeat adversaries like the Sand Strikers, who cannot be overcome by strength alone, pushing him to deepen his grasp of his abilities. He is later captured, his energy drained to forge a mighty sword, which turns him temporarily to stone before he is freed.
During the Gaiden storyline, at age 16, Kento wins a local lottery and uses part of the prize to throw a birthday celebration for Ryo Sanada. He then travels to the United States with Ryo and Cye Mouri to look into Sage Date’s disappearance. While there, he brings the group to his Uncle Chin’s restaurant in Chinatown and steps in when his uncle flirts with Mia Koji. He also battles a mysteriously animated, empty Halo armor in New York.
In the Legend of the Inferno Armor (Kikoutei Densetsu), now 17, Kento is seen surfing and later journeys to Africa with the other warriors. There, he displays his physical might by halting a speeding truck without using his armor.
In the Message OVA, he continues fighting alongside his comrades and is granted a new suit of armor by Suzunagi, though the precise nature of its powers remains undefined.
