Description
Yakumo Tatsuro (known as Yakumo Shindo in Japanese media) is the final human survivor of the Human-Enterran war. She is the daughter of Dr. Daigo Tatsuro (or Dr. Shindo), the scientist who helped develop the Enterran race and sought a cure for the Lanancuras virus. Placed in hibernation at age four to ensure her survival, a malfunction extended her intended 50-year sleep to 500 years (300 years in the Japanese version). She awoke physically aged 17 into a world renamed Enterra and ruled by Enterrans.
As an infant, she absorbed celestial powers from a shard of the meteorite imprisoning Lanancuras, granting latent abilities: telepathy, telekinesis, energy projection, and terrain manipulation. These powers manifest slowly, and her pacifist nature initially compels her to refuse using them offensively. Her personality blends profound kindness and gentleness with naivety and emotional immaturity, her extended hibernation leaving her mentally resembling a young child despite her physical age. She abhors violence, consistently advocating for peace and redemption even for adversaries, though this idealism sometimes endangers her.
Her journey focuses on reaching Shinzo, a sanctuary believed capable of restoring humanity. She is joined by three Enterran guardians—Mushra, Sago, and Kutal—befriending them after freeing Mushra from imprisonment. Her relationship with Mushra evolves into mutual affection, causing jealousy in Sago; in the manga, they marry and have a daughter.
In the original timeline, Yakumo's pacifism is tested confronting the original Mushrambo, who massacred humanity. Declaring "I cannot forgive you!", she unleashes her powers to defeat him, altering history and preventing the Human-Enterran war. This resets the timeline, enabling peaceful human-Enterran coexistence.
The new timeline reveals Lanancuras, empowered by the absence of conflict, threatening to break free. Yakumo becomes the "Barrier Maiden", using her powers to reinforce his prison. This act drains her life force. Faced with Kadrian threats to her friends, she annihilates them in a surge of power, accelerating her decline. She dies at sunset while entrusting Binka with her final wishes, her body dissolving into light. Posthumously, her power revives Mushrambo's destroyed EnCard for the final battle against Lanancuras. Her spirit later appears to Mushra during his sacrifice to defeat Lanancuras, stating she has "finally reached Shinzo".
The manga adaptation depicts a different outcome: Yakumo survives, marries Mushra, and raises their daughter in a human-Enterran village. Unofficial extensions portray celestial guardians restoring her with fragmented memories, prompting a journey to reclaim her past.
