Description
George Kodama, also called Jyouji Kodama, arrives in the decaying mining town of Kimujuku driven by a singular goal: finding Genzo Araki. His weathered, rough-hewn look, marked by stubble, slightly unkempt hair, and attire of overcoat and hat, sets him apart from typical anime designs. Though appearing a detached drifter, he pursues a deeply personal mission tied to a fifteen-year-old mystery—the disappearance of his older brother, an SDF soldier, during a train heist in Kimujuku that also saw a shipment of gold bullion vanish. This unresolved past fuels his determination to uncover the truth, despite warnings to abandon his quest.
Kimujuku is dominated by two rival factions: the affluent Tanokura family and the street-level Ginzame yakuza clan. George strategically infiltrates their conflict, accepting employment from both sides as a bodyguard and enforcer. He protects Shusaku Tanokura's daughter, Miyuki, while simultaneously engaging with the Ginzame syndicate. This double allegiance allows him to gather intelligence and manipulate the factions, playing them against each other. An adept combatant, George employs strategic cunning alongside physical skills, favoring improvisation and tactical thinking over unnecessary violence. He sustains injuries in confrontations, yet his resourcefulness frequently averts greater harm.
George's investigation peels back layers of secrecy shrouding the town's history, including the missing train car and its link to Araki. His interactions deepen the mission's complexity. Sanae Araki, the innkeeper where he lodges, shares a mutual attraction with George; her own enigmatic past remains entwined with Kimujuku's secrets, though the town's dangers constrain their connection. Miyuki Tanokura develops romantic feelings for him, introducing tension given her youth and family loyalties. Antagonists like Rin Shirogane, a volatile Ginzame enforcer, perceive George as a threat, resulting in repeated violent clashes.
Throughout his time in Kimujuku, George's relentless persistence forces the town's buried truths to the surface, including the fates of his brother and Genzo Araki. His journey remains fixed on resolving the central mystery, defined by resilience, investigative tenacity, and the moral ambiguity required to navigate a corrupt environment.
