Description
Herman Von Luneberg, a military officer in the Galactic Empire, had previously commanded the Free Planets Alliance's elite Rosen Ritter infantry regiment. This specialized close-combat unit, largely formed from former Imperial citizens and their descendants, possessed formidable prowess yet suffered deep distrust fueled by frequent defections back to the Empire. Luneberg himself returned to Imperial service via defection, joining five other Rosen Ritter commanders who betrayed the Alliance. His claimed noble lineage, including speculated blood ties to the Goldenbaum Dynasty, facilitated this defection, though the connection remained unconfirmed.

Holding the Imperial rank of Rear Admiral (or Commodore), Luneberg commanded ground forces during the Battle of Van-Fleet Starzone in March 794 UC. Stationed on Van-Fleet 4-2, his troops intercepted and ambushed a reconnaissance mission led by his Rosen Ritter successor, Otto Frank von Wahnschaffe, repelling the Alliance unit and causing Wahnschaffe's death. This engagement forced Walter von Schönkopf, the Rosen Ritter's vice-commander, to assume leadership and organize defenses against the following Imperial assault.

Luneberg possessed considerable hand-to-hand combat skill, honed with the Rosen Ritter and respected even by former comrades. Within the Imperial court, he maneuvered politically to secure his position, including entering an arranged marriage with a noblewoman. He concealed his responsibility for her fiancé's death; the marriage remained dysfunctional yet maintained a degree of propriety. His ambition and opportunism limited alliances among the Imperial nobility. A brief service under Admiral Richard von Grimmelshausen alongside Reinhard von Lohengramm (then Müsel) fostered a rivalry due to conflicting approaches, with Grimmelshausen favoring Reinhard and further marginalizing Luneberg.

Luneberg's actions precipitated his downfall. During the Van-Fleet 4-2 events, Imperial military authorities withdrew support, and court elements indirectly orchestrated his demise. Recognizing his untenable position, Luneberg confronted Walter von Schönkopf in single combat and was killed. Schönkopf, acknowledging their shared past and Luneberg's dignified acceptance of death, granted him an honorable sendoff. The Rosen Ritter perceived this act as a form of redemption for Luneberg's betrayal. His death cemented Schönkopf's reputation and future role within the Alliance military.
