Description
Katerose von Kreutzer, known as Karin, was born in 784 UC (3584 CE) on Heinessenpolis, Heinessen. Her parents, Imperial defectors Walter von Schönkopf and Rosalein von Kreutzer, separated after only three days together. Schönkopf remained unaware of his daughter until a letter notified him of her birth and name. Raised solely by her mother, Katerose nursed significant resentment towards her absent father throughout her childhood.
She joined the Free Planets Alliance military, attaining the rank of corporal by mid-799 UC (3599 CE). Serving as pilot of Spartanian 202 in the 1st Spartanian Squadron under Wing Commander Olivier Poplin within Admiral Yang Wen-li's Ark Fleet at Dayan Khan, Poplin introduced her to Sub-lieutenant Julian Mintz, though she showed initial indifference.
Her combat experience included the Battle of the Corridor in April 800 UC (3600 CE), where she shot down one enemy fighter and returned safely. During the Eleventh Battle of Iserlohn in February 801 UC (3601 CE), her squadron destroyed 104 Imperial Walküre fighters for the loss of only 16 Spartanians; Katerose personally accounted for at least two enemy fighters.
Her relationship with her father evolved from hostility to reconciliation. Learning of her presence in the fleet from Dusty Attemborough in late 799 UC, Schönkopf removed her name from the Iserlohn recapture operation roster without her knowledge. Their first meeting was confrontational, Katerose expressing anger over his absence. Encouraged by Poplin and Julian Mintz, she gradually reconciled with Schönkopf. She advised Julian to stay near her father during the Battle of Shiva in 801 UC. She witnessed Julian and the Rosen Ritter, including Schönkopf, board the Brünhild, where Schönkopf died. Julian comforted her afterward, and on June 1st—the anniversary of both their fathers' deaths—they confessed mutual feelings.
Her relationship with Julian developed from initial indifference to romantic partnership. After arguing about Schönkopf and her mother, and following Yang Wen-li's death, her feelings softened. Their first substantive conversation occurred in July 800 UC when she provided Julian with a family fatigue remedy. They subsequently discussed motivations for fighting and leadership challenges, Katerose supporting Julian's decisions while expressing frustration at his lack of confidence. By 801 UC, they were on first-name terms, and she worried for his safety during the Brünhild infiltration.
Katerose admired Frederica Greenhill Yang, citing her as a reason for remaining with the Iserlohn forces after Yang's death. She drew parallels between the Yangs' relationship and her parents' brief union. While initially unimpressed by Yang Wen-li during his lifetime, she later recognized his historical significance.
Following the détente, she accompanied the Imperial fleet to Heinessen after Julian negotiated with Kaiser Reinhard. She later traveled to Fezzan with Julian, Attemborough, and Poplin, witnessing the Terraist attack on the Welserd compound and Reinhard's subsequent death. She and Julian planned to return to Heinessen after the Ba‘alat Starzone gained autonomy.
