Larela reigns as the absolute ruler of the planet La-Metal, a tenth world in the solar system following a highly eccentric thousand-year orbit. As Holy Queen, she commands a subterranean civilization and initiates a plan to abduct and enslave humans from Earth before its planned destruction during La-Metal's close approach. This annihilation, caused by La-Metal's gravitational pull, is calculated to allow her people to colonize Earth and achieve an eternal spring, ending their cycle of enduring an endless winter except for a brief period every millennium.
In one film, Larela manifests as a small girl with a glowing body and eyes, accompanied by energy halos at her head and feet. In other narratives, she appears more human-like with white hair, a white dress, and purple eyes.
Her personality is predominantly cruel, ruthless, genocidal, and cold-hearted. She harbors a deep-seated hatred for humankind, whom she calls "monkeys," and demonstrates a willingness to enslave populations, transform beings into living machines, and manipulate her own daughter, La Andromeda Promethium—known on Earth as Yayoi Yukino—to serve her purposes. Her primary motivation is the survival and prosperity of the La-Metalians, which she believes justifies any action. She despises losing and maintains firm control over her subordinates, expecting absolute loyalty.
In some manga interpretations and the side story "Space Symphonic Poem Maetel: Galaxy Express 999 Side Story," she exhibits traits of kindness, wisdom, and honor. In these narratives, she assists Maetel in thwarting the evil plans of her mother, Queen Promethium. These versions explore a more complex emotional dimension where Larela develops strong feelings for the Earthling Hajime Amamori after their first meeting. His perceived betrayal leads to intense anger and a renewed determination to destroy Earth and eliminate Yayoi.
Her background establishes her as the long-standing holy queen of La-Metal. Her rule involves sending a Millennial Queen to Earth every thousand years to act as a shadow dictator, secretly guiding human development. The current Millennial Queen is her daughter, Promethium, whom she expects to obey without question.
A significant confrontation occurs when Promethium rebels against her mother's genocidal plans for Earth. Larela challenges her daughter to a duel on Venus, with Earth's fate in the balance. Promethium emerges victorious and spares Larela's life, solidifying the conflict between them. Larela continues her advance toward Earth, leading to a large-scale battle where she reveals the prophesied collision was a ruse to facilitate occupation while La-Metal continued its journey.
During the final confrontation with Earth's defenders, Larela is betrayed by her subordinate, Commander Leopard, and confronted by Promethium and Hajime. Aboard her ship, she is pierced by a blast from a weakened Promethium after being mortally wounded by Hajime. Defeated, she attempts to crawl away but is destroyed by the collective energy of the past Millennial Queens.
In the later story "Space Symphonic Poem Maetel," Larela is encountered by Maetel deep within La-Metal and is revealed to have survived. She acts as a guide, revealing the existence of a hidden inner planet and the organic energy conversion system needed to activate a gravitational control system. Understanding that a strong-willed soul is required to power the system and save both planets, Larela sacrifices herself by lowering into the mechanism, destroying the remnants of Promethium's plans and enabling the separation of the inner planet.
