Description
Hedwig von Trapp, born in 1917 as the third child and eldest daughter of Georg von Trapp in Salzburg, Austria, initially resents governess Maria Kutschera’s arrival, displaying hostility that transforms into acceptance and loyalty. At thirteen, she shoulders responsibilities caring for younger siblings. Hedwig experiences a rebellious phase, running away after a conflict only to be robbed and stranded until rescued by a boy named Thomas, an event contributing to her maturity.
Musically inclined, she participates in family singing activities, developing her talent under priest Franz Wasner, the choir director. Hedwig performs with the Trapp Family Singers across Europe, including their pivotal victory at the 1936 Salzburg Festival.
During the 1938 Nazi annexation of Austria, she defies the regime by refusing to display the Nazi flag or participate in Hitler Youth. Her resistance intensifies after witnessing Gestapo arrest their Jewish doctor, Vortman. Fleeing Austria with her family, Hedwig departs by train to Italy while they eventually settle in the United States.
Later, she becomes a music teacher at St. Anthony’s School in Oahu, Hawaii, and subsequently in Zell am See, Austria. Chronic asthma affects her throughout life. She maintains deep affection for her father and protective instincts toward siblings during displacement and adaptation. Her personal interests include friendships like that with Nastassja Ivanovna. Hedwig dies in 1972 at age fifty-five.
