Shion, originally named Aries Shion, served as Grand Pope of Sanctuary and was the Gold Saint of Aries. A survivor of the 18th-century Holy War alongside Libra Dohko, he belonged to the race from the lost continent of Lemuria (or Mu), granting him a lifespan exceeding 200 years while maintaining the physical appearance of an 18-year-old. Trained under Hakurei in Jamir, he mastered cloth repair and developed psychic abilities, including viewing past lives of saints through damaged cloths. A childhood encounter with Balron Lune nearly killed him, but Hakurei’s blood transfusion saved him, cementing his loyalty to Athena.
During the 18th-century Holy War in "Next Dimension," Shion and Dohko invaded Hades’ Elysium fields. Hindered by a barrier around Hades’ castle, he confronted specters like Griffon Veemer and his former ally Suikyo, now the Garuda specter. A vision in the Crateris Silver Cloth’s sacred water revealed his future as Pope. Later, as Pope, he trained Mu as his Aries successor, recognizing the youth’s innate cloth-repair talents.
In the 20th century, Shion prepared for Athena’s reincarnation and the impending war. He chose Sagittarius Aiolos as his papal successor over the more powerful Gemini Saga, sensing darkness within Saga. This decision led Saga to fatally attack the physically weakened, aged Shion. Shion’s body was later found on Star Hill.
Resurrected by Hades during the "Hades Chapter," Shion wore the Aries Surplice and outwardly allied with specters, including deceased Gold Saints. Secretly, he orchestrated a scheme to aid Athena: feigning betrayal, he and the resurrected saints delivered a critical message urging Athena to awaken her Eighth Sense to challenge Hades in the underworld. In Sanctuary, Shion confronted his disciple Mu, though their battle was a ruse halted by Dohko’s intervention. He restored the Bronze Saints’ cloths using Athena’s blood and commanded them to invade the underworld. His resurrected body disintegrated after reuniting with Dohko, fulfilling his mission.
Shion wielded psychic powers like telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation. His techniques included the Crystal Wall, an invisible barrier reflecting attacks, and the Stardust Revolution, which created a dimensional space containing a galaxy or nebula to assault opponents with stardust at light speed. Official sources noted that had Shion been in his prime during Saga’s rebellion, Saga could not have killed him, underscoring his standing among Athena’s strongest Gold Saints.
Across media like "The Lost Canvas," Shion consistently displayed strategic acumen, protective instincts toward younger saints, and unwavering devotion to Athena. His arc—from Holy War survivor to Pope to sacrificial strategist—highlighted his resilience and tactical brilliance against divine threats.
