Saga des Gémeaux, originally the Gemini Gold Saint, embodies an inherent duality. Born in Greece with his twin brother Kanon, an evil spirit called Lemure merged with him during infancy, creating distinct split personalities: one benevolent and loyal to Athena, the other tyrannical and power-hungry. His hair visually signaled these shifts—blond (or blue in anime) for benevolence, dark-haired with red eyes for malice. Initially revered as exceptionally kind and wise, Saga was a leading candidate to succeed Pope Shion. However, Shion detected the latent evil within him and chose Sagittarius Aiolos instead. This rejection, compounded by Kanon’s manipulations, unleashed Saga’s malignant persona. He murdered Shion at Star Hill and usurped his identity as Pope. Shortly after, he attempted to assassinate the infant Athena with a golden dagger gifted by the Titan Cronus. Aiolos intervened and escaped with the goddess, leading Saga to frame Aiolos as a traitor and consolidate control over the Sanctuary for 13 years. As the false Pope, Saga orchestrated campaigns to eliminate threats. He ordered Silver Saints to kill the Bronze Saints serving Athena (Saori Kido) and dispatched Gold Saints like Leo Aiolia to retrieve the Sagittarius Cloth. When Aiolia uncovered his treachery, Saga mentally controlled him using the Genrō Maō Ken technique. He later deployed the Sagitta Silver Saint to shoot Athena with a cursed arrow, forcing the Bronze Saints to traverse the Twelve Houses to save her. Within his own temple, Saga employed dimensional illusions and psychic attacks against Andromeda Shun and Cygnus Hyoga, and confronted Pegasus Seiya and Phoenix Ikki in the Pope’s chambers. Defeated by Seiya wielding Athena’s Shield—which purified his evil half—Saga reclaimed his benevolent self, apologized to Athena, and committed suicide by stabbing himself with her scepter. In the spin-off *Episode G*, Saga’s malignant persona collaborated with the Titan Pontos to revive Cronus, though his true aim was to overthrow the Titan and rule Earth himself. He manipulated events like Capricorn Shura’s loyalty through mental domination and intercepted Cronus’s attack on Athena’s statue. However, his conflicting personalities disrupted his plans, allowing Cronus to briefly regain power. During the Hades Chapter, Saga, alongside deceased Gold Saints Camus and Shura, feigned allegiance to Hades to infiltrate the underworld. Reborn as Specters in Surplices, they fought through the Twelve Houses, eliminating allies like Virgo Shaka with the forbidden Athena Exclamation technique. Their objective was to reach Athena and awaken the Eighth Sense, enabling them to enter the underworld alive. Before their bodies disintegrated, they aided Athena’s mission in Elysium. In the afterlife, Saga joined the other Gold Saints in sacrificing their souls at the Wailing Wall to destroy the barrier protecting Hades. Other media expanded his roles. In *Saintia Shō*, his malignant half temporarily resurfaced as the war god Ares, though his connection to Eris (Ares’ sister) remained ambiguous. The film *Legend of Crimson Youth* featured his resurrection under the sun god Abel; he fought alongside the Bronze Saints to defeat Abel’s follower Lynx Jaoh via a suicide attack. In *Tenkai-hen Overture*, his spirit was imprisoned by Olympian gods for his role in Hades’ defeat.
