Phoenix Ikki, the Bronze Saint of the Phoenix constellation, is the older brother of Andromeda Shun. He endured brutal training on Death Queen Island under Guilty, who aimed to unlock Ikki's potential through rage and hatred. This culminated in Guilty killing Ikki's friend Esmeralda, driving Ikki to kill Guilty in retaliation and claim the Phoenix Cloth. This trauma forged a unique rage-based Cosmo within him, distinct from other Saints, and solidified his solitary, aggressive nature. Despite his Bronze Saint rank, his raw power surpasses most Silver Saints and rivals many Gold Saints, establishing him as one of Athena's most formidable warriors.
Ikki initially emerges as an antagonist during the Galaxian Wars, leading the Black Saints to steal the Sagittarius Gold Cloth and exact revenge against the Graude Foundation. After overwhelming the other Bronze Saints, Pegasus Seiya defeats him with the Sagittarius Cloth's aid. Crushed in a landslide, he later revives during Shun's battle with a Silver Saint, regains his sense of self, and reconciles with his brother. Following his redemption, he operates independently but aids Athena and the Bronze Saints at critical moments. During the Sanctuary arc, he sacrifices himself in a mutual defeat against Virgo Shaka to remove him from the Bronze Saints' path; both are later revived by Shaka.
In the Poseidon arc, Ikki confronts Marine General Lyumnades Kaza, who exploits emotional weaknesses by mimicking loved ones. Ikki defeats Kaza despite facing an illusion of Shun, demonstrating emotional resilience. He then battles Sea Dragon Kanon, surviving the Galaxian Explosion and dimensional banishment without achieving a decisive victory.
The Hades Chapter marks a significant evolution. Ikki appears at Sanctuary declaring neutrality, distrusting both sides. This changes upon learning of Shun's possession by Hades. Confronting the god in Shun's body, Ikki cannot strike his brother, allowing Hades to mortally wound him and imprison his body in Cocytus, the frozen hell for defying gods. After reviving, Ikki escapes Cocytus—aided by Pandora (manga) or through his own power (anime). Pandora requests vengeance against Hypnos and Thanatos for their betrayal, giving him her protective rosary to traverse the Superdimension safely and sacrificing herself. The Phoenix Cloth evolves wings, enabling flight to Elysion. During the battle against Thanatos, the Leo Gold Cloth responds to Ikki's Cosmo due to his birth constellation. Destroyed, it transforms into the Phoenix God Cloth upon contact with Athena's blood, granting divine-level power. He joins the final assault on Hades' true body in Elysion.
In the canonical sequel "Saint Seiya: Next Dimension," Ikki travels to the 18th-century Holy War to aid Athena in saving Seiya from Hades' curse. He intervenes to protect Shun from Artemis' Satellite commander, Lascoumoune, and later battles across the past Sanctuary temples, confronting Gemini Cain and Abel. The 18th-century Leo Kaiser acknowledges him as the future Leo Gold Saint.
Ikki's primary techniques are the Phoenix Illusion Demon Fist, attacking opponents' psyches with illusions or traumatic memories, and the Flaming Phoenix Wings Rise, noted for destructive power. His Phoenix Cloth uniquely self-repairs even after complete destruction. Each resurrection augments his strength, cementing his reputation as an unpredictable and nearly indomitable force.
