Description
Shin dell'Ariete, also known as Aries Shion, trained under Hakurei in Jamir. There he mastered cloth restoration and cultivated unique psychic abilities. In his youth, the celestial star Balron Lune mortally wounded Shion with a black whip; Hakurei saved his apprentice's life through a blood transfusion.
At the onset of the 18th-century Holy War against Hades, Shion ascended to become the Gold Saint of Aries. He joined forces with Libra Dohko to assault the Elysian Fields. Specters, including the Underworld judge Griffon Veemer, intercepted them. Though weakened by Hades' barrier, Pegasus Tenma's horse rescued Shion and his allies. During this battle, Shion foresaw his future as Grand Pope after viewing his reflection in the sacred water of the Crateris Silver Cloth.
As Grand Pope in the 20th century, Shion prepared Mu as his successor for the Aries Gold Cloth. When Athena reincarnated, he readied for war and chose Sagittarius Aiolos as his papal heir due to Aiolos' loyalty, rejecting Gemini Saga over perceived darkness. This decision provoked Saga to attack and kill Shion.
Resurrected during Hades' invasion alongside other Gold Saints, Shion feigned allegiance to Hades by wearing a Surplice. This ruse allowed him to infiltrate the Underworld and deliver a vital message to Athena: she must die to awaken her Eighth Sense and battle Hades within his realm. After conveying the plan, Shion revealed his true allegiance to the Bronze Saints and restored their damaged cloths using Athena's blood. He commanded them to invade the Underworld before his body disintegrated.
In his final moments, Shion briefly reunited with Dohko before vanishing. He also encountered his former pupil Mu during the conflict. Though Mu recognized Shion's tears and likely discerned his true loyalty, facing his mentor seemingly allied with Hades caused Mu profound distress. Dohko's intervention prevented battle.
