Dragon Shiryu serves as the Bronze Saint representing the Dragon constellation. He trained at the Five Ancient Peaks of Lushan in China under the Libra Gold Saint, Dohko, earning his Dragon Cloth renowned for exceptional defensive power and one of the strongest shields. A distinct green and white dragon mark manifests on his back during surges of Cosmo energy, fading as his life force wanes and serving as a visual gauge of his vitality. During the Galaxian Wars, Shiryu battled Pegasus Seiya. Though initially overpowering his opponent, a flaw in his Rising Dragon Punch allowed Seiya to exploit an opening, stopping Shiryu's heart. Seiya revived him by striking his back, reigniting his heart and restoring the dragon mark, forging their enduring alliance. Later, Shiryu journeyed to the Cloth Cemetery to repair the damaged Pegasus and Dragon Cloths. He sacrificed his own blood, nearly dying before Aries Mu intervened to save him. Confronting the Silver Saint Perseus Algol, Shiryu blinded himself to counter Algol's petrifying shield and free his petrified comrades. Initially deemed permanent, he regained his sight by awakening his Seventh Sense during a subsequent battle against Cancer Deathmask. In the Poseidon arc, he fought the Marine General Chrysaor Krishna. Despite Krishna destroying his shield and inflicting severe wounds, Shiryu awakened the Excalibur technique—a spiritual inheritance from Capricorn Shura—shattering Krishna's spear and defeating him by severing his chakra points, sacrificing his eyesight once more. Within the Asgard story, Shiryu aided Seiya against the God Warrior Siegfried, pinpointing Siegfried's sole weak point on his nape to enable Seiya's decisive blow. In "The Hades Chapter - Sanctuary," Shiryu defied Athena's order for the Bronze Saints to remain, traveling to Sanctuary to protect Dohko. Despite blindness, he defeated multiple resurrected Saints, including Algol, showcasing heightened combat adaptability. He witnessed the confrontation between Dohko and former Pope Aries Shion, learning the Rozan Hyaku Ryu Ha technique. Later, Shiryu and his fellow Bronze Saints intervened to halt the forbidden Athena Exclamation launched by Shion and the traitorous Gold Saints. The spirit of Shura aided Shiryu during this event, reflecting their shared connection through Excalibur. The arc concluded with Shiryu present as Athena sacrificed herself to halt Hades's forces. In "The Hades Chapter - Inferno," Shiryu descended into the Underworld with Cygnus Hyoga. He explained his strategic acceptance of blindness to Hyoga, citing past experiences to avoid sensory traps. When Specters blocked their path, Shiryu remained behind voluntarily, deploying the newly mastered Rozan Hyaku Ryu Ha to defeat three Specters simultaneously, enabling his companions to advance toward Athena. During "The Hades Chapter - Elysion," Shiryu reached Elysion with the other Bronze Saints. Their Cloths transformed into God Cloths after anointment with Athena's blood. He battled the twin gods Hypnos and Thanatos and joined the assault on Hades. The official sequel manga, "Saint Seiya: Next Dimension," depicts Shiryu traveling back to the 18th century Holy War alongside Hyoga to aid Athena in saving the cursed Pegasus Seiya. There, the 18th-century Libra Gold Saint designated Shiryu as his successor for the Libra Gold Cloth in the 20th century. In the spin-off "Saint Seiya Omega," set post-Hades, Shiryu returned to Lushan, married Shunrei, and fathered a son, Ryūhō. An unspecified incident cost him his five senses, compelling him to relinquish the Dragon Cloth to Ryūhō. After the defeat of the god Abzu, his senses restored. During the Pallasite conflict, he donned the Libra Gold Cloth—inherited from the previous Gold Saint Genbu—to join the assault on the enemy stronghold. The film "Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary" presents an alternate portrayal. Shiryu participates in the Sanctuary invasion, engaging Cancer Deathmask. His Dragon Cloth sustains damage during the battle, causing the dragon mark on his back to glow intensely. While the film condenses the narrative, core traits like determination and willingness for sacrifice remain consistent.
