Bernard, a 9-year-old orphan adopted in infancy by the de la Vega family, thrives as their cherished mascot. Slender with fair skin, mahogany brown or auburn hair, and teal or petrol eyes, he is regularly dressed in a golden cream yellow long-sleeved shirt and brown pants. He transforms into "Little Zorro" wearing a white long-sleeved shirt, blue vest, black hat, cape, mask, and knee-high black leather boots.

Lively, quick-witted, and cheerful, Bernard is regarded as a son by Don Alejandro and a brother by Diego de la Vega, sharing an especially close bond with Diego. Early in the series (episode 2), Bernard uncovers Diego's secret identity as Zorro and resolves to become "Little Zorro," aiding the fight against corrupt authorities.

His relationships extend to friendships with village children Manuel, Sergio, and Leona, and his loyal bulldog Figaro.
