Description
Bernard is a lively, quick-witted nine-year-old orphan adopted in infancy by the de la Vega family, where he serves as their cherished mascot. Don Alejandro regards him as a son, while Diego de la Vega treats him as a brother. Slender with fair skin, auburn hair, and teal eyes, Bernard typically wears a golden cream-yellow long-sleeved shirt and brown pants. As Little Zorro, his disguise includes a white shirt, blue vest, black hat, cape, mask, and tall leather boots.
He idolizes Zorro, and upon discovering Diego’s secret identity in episode two, Bernard becomes his resourceful sidekick. Using his small stature and cleverness, he eavesdrops for intelligence and employs unconventional tricks to aid their fight against regional tyrants. Bernard also playfully meddles as a "Cupid" to nurture Diego’s romance with Lolita Prideaux. He shares mutual adoration with the housekeeper Maria, though she scolds him occasionally.
His journey reveals vulnerability—after a rescue from a collapsing room leaves him sobbing, Zorro comforts him. Bernard’s loyalty extends to his bulldog Figaro; he tearfully abandons Figaro in the woods before reuniting with him. He bonds with friends Manuel, Sergio, Leona, and love interest Nikita. When Lady Barbara, the Governor-General’s wife, offers adoption, Bernard declines despite their closeness, choosing the de la Vegas.
Throughout, Bernard balances cheerful mischief with bravery, evolving from an orphan into a pivotal ally who actively shapes events alongside his hero.
