Description
Comandante Luis Raymond operates as the primary antagonist in the anime adaptation, commanding the Spanish Army in mid-19th century California. His arrival establishes a military dictatorship marked by systematic civilian oppression. Soldiers under his directive enforce a terror regime: daily confiscations of money and food from impoverished citizens, causing widespread hunger, poverty, and misery. The military executes rebels and torments their families, violating established laws. Raymond eliminates perceived threats without hesitation, ordering deaths like that of Chichita for advocating freedom.
Driven by ambition, he plots to assassinate the Governor-General to consolidate power over California. Lieutenant Gabriel serves as his trusted subordinate and right-hand man in executing oppressive measures. Raymond shares a complex dynamic with protagonist Diego Vega; their adversarial roles—rooted in Diego’s secret identity as Zorro—feature a rivalry tinged with personal regard. He directs intense animosity toward Zorro, whose defense of the weak and disruption of military authority challenge Raymond’s control. Zorro’s intervention to save Chichita and ensure her family’s escape provokes Raymond’s fury, triggering relentless but futile manhunts. Raymond also pursues personal interest in Lolita Prideaux, Diego’s childhood friend, intertwining personal conflict with his antagonism toward Diego and Zorro. His character persists as a tyrant: ruthless against dissent, relentless in pursuing Zorro, and unwavering in his brutal governance.
