The character Red Demon, also called Akaoni, emerges as an antagonist driven by jealous rage upon hearing the gifted flute-player Aya. He captures her, threatening villagers and disrupting peace. Red Demon acts under coercion from the more powerful Kurooni (Black Demon), who forces him into servitude through intimidation, revealing his subordination.
After suffering defeat by the superhumanly strong Taro, Red Demon reassesses his circumstances. This pivotal moment leads him to shift allegiance, agreeing to help Taro rescue Aya from Kurooni. His collaboration proves crucial in the battle against this greater threat, contributing to liberating the terrorized village and solidifying his redemption.
Seeking a new purpose after aiding Taro, Red Demon is hurled into the clouds by Taro. There, he transitions into service for the thunder god, repositioned within the mythological framework with a role tied to storms and lightning. This ability later aids Taro by calling down needed rain during a rice paddy drought, demonstrating his indirect supportive function.
Physically characterized by his drum, which he beats during appearances, Red Demon's initial aggression gradually yields to a compliant and helpful demeanor. His journey traces a transformation from bullied subordinate to a self-determined entity aligned with benevolent forces.
